Probably a really big wire saw similar to what is used in a rock quarry.

Some internet sleuthing turned up these two web sites that have information. The second one tells exactly how they cut it up.

Ah, yes. Just as I speculated on an earlier post. I now remember watching the History Channel or Discovery Channel special on the Kursk and this technique was also mentioned.

New England granite quarries use the wire saws to cut up big blocks of granite. The wire is simply twisted on site to form like a corkscrew then run thru along the granite. Simple but effective.

I saw a thing on the Kursk when they cut it up with the toothed cable. I ran a crane on a bridge job to cut up a barge and concrete pier/column debris. It was a big Lima crawler crane. They brought in a sharpened hardened 3 foot by 8 inch 20 feet long solid chunk of iron. To keep the cable from backlashing when it hit bottom we had a scraper tire cabled to it and the hoist cable. Id raise it 100 feet over the water realease the brakes and watch it fly. Made short work of the columns and was a bit hard to cut all the way across the barge. I just got on the bridge and walked the crane across till i was all the way through then id start over. On the first 2 hits Id have a diver check it then Id have them move out and let me hammer about 2 hours. It also will do a number on a 40 inch pine stump when the boss aint lookin.
