I need some advice on rust removal especially on the springs on my JD 71?
Maybe FWJ can enlighten me.

Wire wheel on a mini-grinder. Wire brush. 4-in-1 paint scraper. Sand blasting cabinet.

I spent 3 hours this morning cleaning up a rusty old disc getting ready to paint. No set method. Just dig in and go.

Looks like I get to dig in to a pair of rusty #70 planter units later this week. Just bought a pair of them. I'm going to have to sell a planter or 3 or the Mrs. is going to file commitment papers. 5 of 'em now.

Who can pass up a bargain?

I'll probably start a thread as I go through them. They'll get a complete reconditioning before putting them to work. My son wants my #71's. I split up a 4-row planter. He's got 2 units from that and I still have the other 2. He wants to put the 4-row back in service.

FarmWithJunk,

That is a great idea of having a thread on the restoration of your planters project. I think quite a few people other than me would be interested, also. There is a lot of interest in these old planters. It's like restoring an old Rambler. But the planter would not just set there after being restored...it would really get used out in a field.

I haven't gone after the pair of #70 flex planter row units yet. I'm supposed to hook up with the seller either wed. or tues of this coming week. I've seen a few pictures and they are intact and in working condition, just a bit rusty and "used" looking. I sorta prefer my equipment to look like it just came off the assembly line. I'll dismantle the units, clean 'em up, prime, paint and decal 'em, then reassemble. Following that, a good tune-up and adjustment.

Last summer, I grew my first crop of popcorn since we moved to the new place. Some soil grows popcorn and some just doesn't. This is some of the best popcorn land I've ever seen! So. This year I'm planning on a sizable plot. I'll shell it, fill quart canning jars, print up some labels, and guess what a few of my friends'll get this Christmas??? The "new" planter will be used primarily to plant the popcorn.

The next Orvil Reddenbacher !
