One of the hydraulic hoses for my fel has a very small leak at the threaded fitting end. I am planning on removing all the connectors in the area and re-doping the threads. The question is - what to use for pipe dope? I would generally not use teflon tape but what is the best thread sealant?

If you are careful while applying it any thread sealant will work. Try to not get any inside of the fittings. Remember, Teflon is also a lubricant so it is easier to overtighten threads and break castings etc..

I have had the best luck with loctite thread sealant but it requires the threads be clean and oil free.

I have tried the permatex high temp thread sealent on my hydrolics. My experience is that it works, but with strong leaks it only works for 20-25 hours of run time before it starts leaking again (happened multiple times). The locktite is better, but I would be hesitant to use it on anything I would like to take back off any time soon.

When I had a leak in the hydraulic fittings on my new scut ..........the dealer sent a mechanic and he used pipe dope on the threads to seal it. He told me that in his opinion the stuff sold by Napa was the best. The technique works.
