Got 8" of snow and 40+ winds this weekend. 3' tall drift in drive way. Got to use the blower for the 2nd time..... I have 1 question. How far should I be throwing snow? 24" fan at 540 rpm all I can get is about 15' to 20'........should I be expecting more or is the snow just to fluffy to go any further? If this is not normal what should I be looking into to fix the problem?

Check the gap between the end of the fan blades and the housing. There are widely differing opinions on how much there should be, I've heard everything from the thickness of a nickel to a 1/4 inch. Used blower, I assume? If so, you might want to consider painting the fan and the impeller housing, and giving them a spray of silicone or cooking spray before using the blower. The silicone makes it a pia to get paint to stick next year though.

Is the fan on most 540 blowers at a one to one with the pto shaft? Haven't checked mine that close but it looks like that is what it is running.

My snow fighting arsenal consists of a new Kioti CK35HST, a 12 year old John Deere 325 and 35 year old Bobcat snowthrower. They all have their uses. The snowthrower is great for sidewalks. The John Deere leaves a very clean, tidy result but takes some time. The Kioti moves a lot of snow and is not limited by large piles.

We will be building a new house with a 750' drive so I plan on putting a snowplow on the Kioti.

The winter here is shaping up to be about average although we had a snowy November. This is about two weeks ago and it's still piling up. The Bobcat/Erskine combo seems to be handling anything thrown at it. So far, so good.
