Flail Mower Pictures of the Ford Flail Mower I can buy..Help !

Ok fellas...help me here ..I know bush hogs but not flail mowers ..and I can buy this one for 400.00 so I am attaching pictures...take a look and see what you think and give me any tips ..I have to call the guy back tonight after 5 PM .. Thanks...

for $400 i'd buy it on chance, but it looks like it has lots of life left in it.

Thanks Brian...I just talked to the fella and he is going to deliver it and we will hook it up to my tractor and if it works then I guess I will buy it..I think I might get it for $350...we will see.. He said the only reason he is selling it is it scalps places in his pasture because the pasture is so uneven...does that make sense..?

Well, yes and no. I can't get a good look at the skid shoes. The right one is in the shadows, and the left one is completely out of the picture. The right one looks like it might have been welded on at one time. If so, I'd (personally) consider that a problem. They're supposed to be attached with plow bolts, which makes them replaceable. If the skids have been modified, that might be part of the scalping problem. Also there are three different heights that the rear roller can be set. From what I can tell, it looks to be in the lowest position (top holes). For rough ground (pastures qualify), it should be in the highest position (bottom holes). An incorrectly positioned rear roller and modified side skids might account for the scalping.

FWIW, I paid $150 for mine (a 74-incher) at a farm implement auction. Put an additional $325 into new knives and hangars, PTO shaft, drive belts, and misc nuts/bolts/zerks/etc. I figure another $25 for paint, which will put me right at the $500 mark. New ones go for more than 10x that. Maybe not that everybody should expect to get one for that kind of investment, so use those numbers for whatever purpose suits you.

If the flail rotor is bent or out of round, it is worth 8 cents a pound. Otherwise, you are probably in the ballpark.
