How come barns up north are built so close to a public road?
I've seen Barnwood Builders taking down barns that are so close to the road, they have to stop traffic to remove debris.

Around here those public roads, back when the barns were built, were single lane wagon trails. Only slightly before that those wagon trails were indian foot trails between lakes and marshes. We had one barn that was nearly right on the road, so that they could travel to and from the fields and farmstead along the road, as well as go to town. Some of the wagon roads were abandoned, some were made into major highways. There is a farm near here, with the barns, house and outbuildings all right next to a "trail" - the type of trail now used by hikers, now part of a WI state forest. But back in the day that trail was the only way to get from one nearby town to another. The new route is a state highway built across a large wetland.

You're probably right. It just seemed odd to me

You can see a larger white drain pipe sticking out from that pile of rocks. Guess it was just the easiest way to do it, but yes, odd looking.

Few old houses near me sit right next to the road. Porch a foot from the road. One no longer has a porch, too close. Old houses.
