I need to dig about 200 9" postholes to erect a farm fence setting 6/7 posts, and to dig about 100 12 postholes to set 10 posts as property boundary markers.

I have a 1968 Ford 2000 3-cylinder gas that does not have remote hydraulics; therefore, the only available down force is gravity.

I am researching which would be a greater value: purchasing a PHD with 9"& 12" bits, OR renting a Skid steer equipped with an auger and bits for a weekend. If I rent a Skid steer with auger then it really does not matter which brand auger it is equipped. However, IF I purchase a PHD, I want a WELL ENGINEERED, WELL BUILT, and DURABLE PHD that will last for years.

So far, I have determined that there are three prospective companies that manufacture PHD's that might be worth their asking price; Bush Hog, Woods and Land Pride. If I purchase, one of my prime concerns is DURABILITY. Warranties and parts availability is wonderful, but if the PHD needs a lot of repairs and replacement parts, I have to wonder about its engineering and quality of manufacture, not to mention its durability.

Today, while visiting a local tractor dealer, he said that both Bush Hog and Woods PHD are manufactured in China, but the Land Pride PHD is manufactured in Kansas, USA. I have looked on Bush Hogg´s website and NOWHERE does it proclaim its products are are made in America?

The quoted Land Pride PHD prices are: PD15 Series, $1.195.00; PD25 Series, $1,295.00; Pride PD35, $1,495.00.

My questions are:
#1, since the latest posts concerning these three PHD were posted back in 2006; does anyone have any CURRENT and ACCURATE information as to WHERE the Bush Hog PHD and the Woods PHD are manufactured?

#2, has anyone purchased a Bush Hog 2102 PHD or a Bush Hog 2103 PHD, or a Woods PHD65 or a Land Pride PD25 PHD or PD35 PHD that was manufactured since 2009?
How has it held up?
Would you purchase another one?

#3, Are the prices I have been quoted fair market prices?

I appreciate you time and reply.
Peter

"Danuser"... I would have never thought of Danuser.
Do you own one?
Thank you very much

I used to until I moved to this little piece of creek bottom where any PHD is absolutely worthless, I would need a diamond core bit to use a PHD in all these rocks so I just bought a backhoe and make all my holes really big !

Danuser makes a very nice PHD in America and supports them well , If you call the company with a question about an old attachment they made you may very well end up talking to someone who knows that piece well - the Owner of the company!

Here is an older thread to give you an idea how Danuser handles "customer service"

Ray,
Thank you for your information.
I looked up Danuser's website and sent an e-mail to their local distributer here in Georgia asking for the contact information of their local dealers.

Hopefully, a PHD will do the trick. My only concern is whether it is less expensive to Purchase or rent.

Thank you again,
Peter

Just a thought, rather than drilling holes which you'll have to backfill, have you considered a a danuser post driver ? It is PTO driven, at least some of the older ones are...i've both used and watched them in action, and unless you're driving in ALOT of rock, will drive your posts cleanly, the post will be tight, and no concrete or back fill ! With practice and pre-placement you should be able to drive a post every few minutes....I know you were inquiring about Augers but wanted to provide you with a viable alternative....

Rich

Edit: oops, just re-read and noticed the PHD....so you've already considered the driver route...:)

Danuser ! Good stuff

Rich,
I looked at the Post Driver, and WOW, that makes it look EASY. However, I am in the rocky soil part of the Upper Piedmont of Georgia not far from Stone Mountain State Park, so I expect the Post Digger to be a better option.
Thak you for your input

A phd digger is a seldom used tool. once the fence is up its stored 99 % of the time. If drilling into rocky soil, a bobcat auger will power thru it and have reverse if it gets stuck.. Either buy a used 3 pt phd and do it a little at a time or rent a bobcat w/auger or a one man pdh from the rental yard.

After 17 yrs here I used to borrow my neighbors 3 pt phd or rented the one man phd from the rental yard. Last week I Traded a old Ford 501 Sickle bar for a nice 3 pt phd auger...so know I store my own lol
