Pet vs $$$

We have no kids, but my wife and I have had 4 dogs in the 20 years since we have been married. 2 have passed and we still have 2. our first Doberman we got in 1995.. he was a very loyal, friendly and happy dog. However .. I stopped adding the vet bills when i got to 60k .. he was a Blue Doberman and plagued with problems. He lived to be 13 and I would spend the same money all over again on him or any of our other dogs. When we took the responsibility to have a dog, we took the responsibility to care for them to the best of our ability. Today, we have pet insurance so hopefully should something happen, we have a buffer for cost.

I had a dog in kidney failure and did the injections for 5 years. She didn稚 like it much at all. I used to warm up the fluid in a hot water bowl ahead of giving it to her which helped. It took both my wife and me to get it done, however.

We had a cat that at 15 became diabetic. I had to give him insulin twice a day. I'd just put some cat treats on the ground, he'd lean down to eat them, I'd grab the scruff of his neck and stick him. He did not care. He wanted that snack. Once I shot right through him and gave myself an insulin dose in my thumb! I called the Vet asked if I was going to get cat cooties or something....

Oh, the cat lived to be 17. So two years of insulin. He didn't suffer any. Good cat. I miss him.

Though I may appear cold hearted.......
There is a reason that "pets" do not really require dental care. Pet animals don't live long enough to outlive their teeth.

A year here, a year there. The dogs and cats accept their lot. Why can we not? I feel it has to do with potential, but that is another topic.
There are three dogs buried "out back". They were wonderful companions, all three. I may opt for another, but it's not a need in my life at this time.

As long as you did not start coughing up fur balls you would have been fine :D

My wife wanted our dogs to go in for teeth cleaning $$$$$. I started giving them bully sticks and the vet then said their teeth looked fine. I have not told my wife what the bully sticks laying on the kitchen floor really are :D. I am not sure if the bully sticks at 4 per day are any cheaper but they sure like them

As much as I love my animals, horses and dogs, prognosis plays a huge part. Also dispensable income. If it comes to needing new tires on the wifes car or getting a dog or horse doctored up, it's gonna be the tires.
