I'm asking this for my wife's friend. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

One of our dogs has cancer and my wife has been all but
moving mountains keeping the dog alive. She has found a
group on the Internet that is concerned with cancers in dogs.
They seem to be a pretty good group from what I can tell.

There is a trial study going on that is showing some good
results in shrinking or removing tumours. The problem is that
the friend has a dog in Colorado but there are no vets who
are in the trial so she needs to get the dog to Washington DC.

My first response was, AIRLINES, but they where hearing bad
things about pets and airlines. There are some private
companies that do transport pets but they have limited
service areas and none go from CO to DC.

Does anyone know how to get a dog from CO to DC?

Thanks,
Dan McCarty

Hi Dan,

You need to check into this group of people. See link below.
http://www.imom.org/links/transport.htm

You should also search the net for Canine Underground Railroad this is a large ground of like minded people that will help you transport a dog across country for free, especially if it's a dog in need.

The Canine Underground Railroad also has a Mailing List. To subscribe to Canine-L send mail to LISTSERV@PSUVM.PSU.EDU with a blank subject line and the following command as the first (and only) line of the message body: SUBSCRIBE CANINE-L Your_Full_Name

Also another contact is Peg Banks at fnpeb@uaf.edu or gryphon8@aol.com for more info

I live about 40 miles outside of DC in Gaithersburg MD. If you need additional information about the area pleas feel free to contact me.

Hope this is of some help

Don - Great advice. My wife and I are members of CURR, and have helped move rescue goldens to Vermont from as far away as Dallas/Ft Worth.

One bit of little known trivia: if your dog tends to get carsick, a couple of ginger snaps every couple of hours will keep things where they belong.

My best wishes to your friend. Our golden had inoperable cancer and we had the good fortune to have a doctor who loved our dog as much as we did as a neighbor. We literally had our girl on chemotherapy treatments performed at a local hospital-not a veterinary hospital, mind you, but the regular "people" hospital.

We'd go in later at night and had a number of nurses as co-conspirators. I swear our golden even knew this was on the QT. Whenever we went there she would slink down and move so quietly not even her nails would click on the tile floor. She got so much attention there it was like she was the mascot or something. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

It gave us probably two more years of really quality time together. I hope your friend can achieve the same.

Gary,

Thanks for the thoughts! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Chase is doing well considering. The tumor has not grown but
it has shifted so it can be seen when the dog lays on her
side. Its inoperable. She was on Chemo but it did not do
much. There is a new treatment that might help but there
are some issues with us getting to the treatment. Chase was
accepted into the trial but they might not be doing the
treatment locally. But our vet knows the vet running the
trial so we are hoping they will just shipped the drugs to NC
from DC. Heck of a lot easier the driving the dog to DC...

That really funny about your dog KNOWING you where
sneaking around. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif We are lucky in that we have some
excellent vets, there are three groups that see our dogs. The
dogs get better health care than we do and I'm not kidding
either. I wish I could find doctors who care as much as the
vets do about Chase. Many call backs, follow through and
conversations on their side that have really impressed me. I
have to many horror stories about doctor treatment of my
family.... I would feel much better going to the dogs vets
than many of the MD doctors we have used.

But Chase has lasted at least a month longer than she was
supposed to and her quality of life is the same. She has lost
alot of weight but that is just part of the cancer I guess. I'll
be suprised if she last out the year. Our oldest Golden died
a couple of years ago in the fall and I'm hoping that does not
happen again.....

I know our friend is checking in the web links... I hope she
can get her dog treated.

Later,
Dan

if you are thinking about flying becarful because most airlines won't fly a sick dog. as well the only airline i will use is delta to fly an animal. they have only lost 2 dogs in over 25 years and both of those dogs flew after delta said they didnt think they should go....a small puppy and an older dog. when i brought my dog back from japan she had her own tickets for every leg of the flight and even had her own attendents! every person that touched her kennel had to sign off on it and she was the first thing taken off the flight everytime and brought to me or they brought me to her so that she would feel more at ease. also it is much cheaper to fly with your dog than to ship them. also note that the gov. will not fly families with pets on united since they have such a bad record with them...they lost 5 in the summer of 98!

i also live just outside of DC and am willing to help any way i can. feel free to contact me for any info or help.
hope the pup is felling better!

kokopelli2,

Thanks for the info and offer to help.

I'll pass on the Delta tip to our friend. I have heard the
nightmare stories about some of the airlines. Its good to
know that Delta is an option.

Thanks,
Dan

We've learned several dirty tricks in our years of canine rescue. One of the best for ensuring the health and safety of flying dogs is to print up several photos of the dog, and to pass them out (along with Hershey's Kisses) to all the children boarding the plane. The children ask the flight attendants about the dog so much (sounds like a variation of "Are we there yet?") that on one flight the captain got on the intercom and reassured all the passengers that Lucy the dog was doing quite well and was being checked every ten minutes.

All's fair when it comes to protecting my dogs! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Dan,

If your friend were to decide to fly her dog on Delta drop me a note. My wife has been a flight attendant with them for 20 years and I am sure can find out any information you need.
