I am in the middle of building a new harness for the engine on a 1971 135. I am having trouble understanding the coil voltage supply. I have always been under the impression that when the igniting switch is turned on, the coil gets voltage and is able to fire when the engine turns over. To kill the engine you simply kill the power to the + side of the coil. Looking at the schematic however, it looks as if the coil wire is joined together at a female spade connector that also has a wire going strait to the starter positive past which is essentially the same as hooking the coil strait to the battery? What am I missing? How can this work this way? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Typically, there's two power circuits for the coil. One will be "full" voltage during cranking and the other will be partial voltage during run. Look at the diagram for a resistor or resistor wire for the ignition or run circuit. If you use full voltage all the time, that will most likely burn the coil up.

Thanks for the reply. This one has the coil with the internal resistor. The schematic shows only the one wire going to the + post.
