Get the money out of college football and focus only on academics. Thoughts?

I'd be fine with that...but just football?

What I expect to happen is NCAA will rescind most of the penalties before too long.

The NCAA has succeeded in punishing the entire area surrounding Penn State. Local businesses and students that work for those businesses not involved with any sports at all will suffer. Students that were on their way to PS to play football were all given the option of changing schools, what about all the other students that would have had a job that was in some way supported by the football program, do they get to leave as well? I agree that the mentality of the football program needed to be changed and all of those involved should be punished but it seems that the punishment has some unintended consequences for far more people than those targeted by the NCAA. The vacating of the wins almost sounds like the old communist way of erasing the existence of someone by removing all references to their existence from the history books. It didn't work then and I think that this will not work now.

The NCAA is punishing the program for decade into the future. Those major players in the scandal are either dead in jail or hiding behind an excuse that they did not know. Who will suffer, not them, only the community and students.

As I said before I think the NCAA's actions against the program just punish innocent people who had nothing to do with the situation. Yet another reason to dislike the NCAA. What I have not seen mention is the impact on other sports programs at PSU. From what I have read in the past the big money making supports fund other sports programs. I think this is because of NCAA and Federal rules. If the football program is limited in its money making for years do these other programs suffer as a result? How is that fair?

Later,

Roy, I think the penalties are overkill....those Penn State officials that were responsible have been fired and are being prosecuted, Sandusky is convicted and Paterno is dead....So just what is being accomplished by punishing Penn State, the institution....? Penn States board of trustees did not do anything illegal....they did not even know about it....What happened was horrible but those responsible should be punished and not future students and faculty....why should they be made to suffer....Penn State, like any university, is comprised of the people it serves and those who work there...why hurt them....what does that prove.....???

The point is to make sure it doesn't happen again as the entire school will have to deal with it...not just the perps.

This ends the "it's not my problem" mantra that apparently plagued many in that school.

The suffering caused by Penn State turning a blind eye to what was going on is horrendous. Why did they do that? Money? Pride? If the NCAA can one person from this kind of suffering at another school by showing schools that "business" is not more important than stopping abuse or reporting criminal activity, then they are right on track. This is a tragedy on every level. Penn State, the local economy, their students and athletes, the legacy of Joe Paterno, and their fans did not have to suffer if only they had the sense to simply do the right thing.

No one knows for sure but I suspect that there are only a handful of sports programs in the NCAA that really pull their own weight. On one hand, KU basketball is a great sports program with a great history. On the other hand, KU football has been kinda a disaster for the last couple years. I believe we will still be paying for three coaches this football season (current and payoffs for two prior coaches).

PSU is a great program and probably made money for the school but where did those profits go? I bet they didn't go for academics.

I honestly read most of the articles and parts of the investigation, and I really do not understand why the NCAA has any say in this what so ever. It was not the fault of the players or the program. IT was a staff issue. People higher than Paterno knew what had went on and failed to do something about it. After reading more and more into it, I think NCAA just found a way to make some good money and tarnish someone they did not possibly like. It really seems more like a jab then any kind of prevention. I also do not agree with taking the statues down and everything else. Paterno bled white and blue for that school. It is all seeming to start looking like everyone is passing the buck to the guy that can not talk.

NCAA has an $11 billion TV contract for basketball and it's suggested by the Wall Street Journal that the upcoming major-college football playoff will earn them $5 billion.

The smoldering corpse of the PSU football program will rightly be the scapegoat for years to come, but I doubt nothing will change nationally as there is just too much money and power in big time college sports.
