I use my Kubota BX to launch my small I/O boat at the cabin... the 4 WD makes launch and retrieval easy...

Looks like that could soon change if/when all boaters will need a yearly Federal permit to operate...

"Unless Congress passes the Clean Boating Act before September 30, 2008, every recreational boater in the country will have to obtain a federal or state permit just to operate their boat."

Here's a link...

We are required to have operator's permits in Canada. The change was preciptated by problems with "personal water craft" Not a big deal to get your card but there is an expense involved. It was $60 for training, test and card. The course my son attended was administered in a way that you could not fail. Tests were individually reviewed, corrected and then graded.... Voila, your card is in the mail.

If you are in a private lake, you may be okay. I know here in Pa that almost anything goes on private water. You don't even need a fishing license if you're on private water.

Sounds like just another form of sneaky taxation.

Last weekend I had a game cop down here tell me I couldn't have my boat in the lake without a registration. He was calling it a personal water craft. He tried giving me a ticket for it but I argued my point successfully. It is a little 10 foot plastic pontoon fishing boat with two seats and no motor mounted. We were using paddles. A "personal watercraft" in Texas has a motor and is designed to be ridden on instead of in. Any type of vessel using a motor also requires registration. Not mine. I just love getting into it with the game cops and winning.

I'll register it when I can save the money for the trolling motor I've been wanting.
It was funny when that cop was trying to quote coast guard regulations. He also tried to tell me I had to have a boater safety certification card. Yeah right! During my 4th year in the Navy I qualified as underway officer of the deck on the Frigate I was on. That required first qualifying for every other watch station on the ship first and hundreds of hours of OJT and studying. We were the first ship in the Navy that anyone could find that required certain enlisted men like me to qualify as Underway OOD and actually stand watch doing it. Very often we would steam with an all enlisted watch team like that. I liked it though and I learned a lot. Rules sure haven't changed since then and my point is I think I know a little more now about coast guard regs than any game cop in the state. The boater safety course here is a joke to me ( more of a money making scheme than a safety thing) and I'm also exempt from it due to my age. Maybe I should carry the plaque with me that my captain gave me when I qualified to be OOD.
