I recently received the following email ostensibly from PayPay:
( We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your PayPal account may

have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. Protecting the security

of your account and of the PayPal network is our primary concern.

Therefore, as a preventative measure, we have temporarily limited access to

sensitive PayPal account features.

The problem is if you look at the source code it is NOT coming from PayPal. In fact, it leads to a fundamentalist Islamic site!!! Now why would they want my password? Hmmm, looks like someone trying to get access to my information so they can create mischief. To all you PayPal users out there, be careful!

Did you report this to PayPal?

Was PayPal purchased by Ebay a while back? If so, report it to them too.

I get that message at least one a week, just hit the delete button fast. Yes PayPal is owned by eBay. Not much they can do about this type of e-mail though, except to send out warnings which they have done.

I thought they could track the email backwards and find the source, or at least the source's host, and potentially work to shut it down.

Don't hold your breath. I have a relative who works Internet fraud for a law enforcement agency that shall remain nameless. According to him, it's like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. They only go after the really big ones, and even then they mostly chase ghosts.

I got the same email a while back.

I independently went to the paypal website and emailed them asking if it was for real...

Never got a reply. I figured it was bogus and deleted it and others that came afterwards...

I wasn't expecting a reply from PayPal other than the robot generated autoresponder...but several hours later I got a very nice reply from a real person thanking me for taking the time to forward the original troll. They had checked it out and found that the Middle Eastern domain had no registered presence on either Ebay or PayPal, and they were taking action to protect their users.

Pretty nice response! Pete
