Yanmar YM2200
Hi. I own a YANMAR YM2200 diesel tractor. A service man came and recommended I get a valve cover gasket and a new starter motor and a dry air filter. The starter still works but he states it is drawing too much amps
overheating the wire and eventually will go out(at the moment I need it the most)

I have a parts book in regular and Japanese numbers.

It seems the part numbers are
starter is 124250-77010
the filter: 124550-12500
the gasket: 124550-11310

I found a german-built starter online for about $320.00. Is there any point in
paying to have the starter rebuilt?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Robert

The next later model (YM2000) used the same Hitachi or NipponDenso starters as Deere and I think Datsun/Nissan. A local rebuilder should be able to throw a Hitachi rebuild kit into your starter, inexpensively. Maybe $30 parts, plus labor.

Or look on Ebay and chase through the crossreferences for your starter model number. There is probably one on there that will fit, and it should be around $100~125.

Have you looked at the valve cover gasket? Most are rubber, and re-usable. If it is unobtainable then RTV sealer should work.

Have you checked Hoyetractor for the gasket and filter?

Hi, California:

Sorry to be slow to reply, but thank you very much for the information. The gasket I have located at Hoyetractor, very reasonably priced. Your information on the starter is something I never would have thought of. I am going to ask for some help locally in attempting the rebuild with the parts you describe.

Again, thanks

PS: I was informed my thread was moved to the REPAIRS forum. I am finding my way around. Initially I did not see your reply moved over in my thread. If I cannot find it in my relocated thread, do you mind if I copy and paste your reply since it is so helpful? Thanks

Sure, copy whatever you want.

I received valuable advice on here when I bought my first Yanmar. It just seems like a good idea for all of us to pass along what the more experienced owners have learned.

Thinking more about your starter - the starter specified for later Yanmars might fit on there. I'm not guaranteeing anything, this is just a guess. For myself, I bought a more powerful later starter and it works great. Only $100 from an Ebay seller. I had to lengthen the small wire down from the key to the starter; no other changes. Here's a post where I described it. (and there is a photo farther down the thread.) If your starter is on the left and has 15 teeth, the starter I used might be suitable.

In any case, we would love to hear how you resolve this. YM2200 is one of the more rare models so there isn't as much breadth of information on here compared to the later models. Your post could help some future owner.
