I've always taken my dog into certain hardware stores where I know he's welcome. They love him, so I just drop the leash, tell him to lie down and go do my thing. It's one of the best ways to socialize him. My last dog was a ham, and knew so many people that I spent 2 weeks taking her around giving every one a chance to say goodbye. When I was offered the dog I have now he'd been on a chain for most of his life and didn't know how to act. He cowered in a corner and would cringe if you walked up to him.
