Has anyone painted a tractor...I presume lots of you have.

I figure to spruce up my JD 4100 by painting it since I have sprayed cars. And Deere sells the paint. Anyone done that? Doesn't appear to be too big a job. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I did my Ford 1210 in the driveway. I spread a large piece of black poly on the driveway and parked the tractor on it. Then I removed everything, so all that was left were the front axle, engine, trans and rear axle sitting on blocks. It didn't even resemble a tractor at that point.

Several applications of Castrol SuperClean, scrubbing and rinsing were in order. I had some bodywork to do to the hood (thanks to the previous owner). The hood, fuel tank, fenders and wheels were painted separately.

Factory decals for the "Ford 1210" on the sides of the hood were around $135, so before I stripped the hood, I made tracings and took pictures. When I had the hood painted blue with the black stripes, I took it to a local sign shop, and they made it look factory for $45.

Another $10 or so for new nuts and bolts was a good investment. It would have been kinda crappy to take the time to make the whole tractor look good and put the rusty old bolts back in.

The initial goal was to make it look nice so I could sell it when I got the Kubota. Plans changed when it became apparent how handy it is to have two tractors. I keep the Ford at my Mom-in-laws in a barn, because she has anbout 5 acres I mow for her. I drive the Kubota to her place, then have one of my boys use it to do the "nice" part while I take the Ford (with the old RFM) and do the banks and rough stuff...............chim

It took a bit longer to get good enough weather for mowing. Here's a pic. Both tractors could use a wash job..............chim
