I sand everything that can be sanded, just smooth not down to metal. On the cast iron parts I pressure wash and apply a DuPont product called 222 adhesion promoter. Then I spray with automotive acrylic enamel or polyurethane.

We have a painter that does good with our tractors. He does plenty of sanding. We give him a couple of tractors a week for him to paint. He spends most effort on the hood, fenders, and wheels as they are the most visible. He uses a HVLP paint sprayer in our paint booth. Some other areas he may sand where needed or even sandblast, but doesn't have to go to bare metal. He gets a tractor in and out of the paint booth rather quickly as we don't mind if there's overspray on a belt, hose, or fan blade. Overall they look excellent. If you spend toooo many meticulous hours preparing and painting them, then you'll end up with a 15 year old tractor with a $10,000 price tag. I've even seen them priced higher that that /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif.

I am going to remove the sheet metal and D/A sand It and spray it off the tractor.. dont want the over spray and dont want the paint dust from painting getting into anything it should not.. I think it can be removed sanded and painted in less than 8hrs then put back on ..I like the power wash Idea and paint frame with out sanding .. but I will tape off everything so no over spray .. spruce green for frame fire engine red for sheet metal

Of course you'd remove all the sheet metal. It's too easy not to. I was referring to overspray such as a FAN BELT or something. 8 hours is probably about right. Fire Engine red is my personal favorite!!

are replacement decals hard to get I do have part numbers for them

I can usually dissassemble a tractor , paint all 3 colors and reassemble in a weekend. This includes painting steering wheel and brackets black. I saw awhile back that Homestead Tractor sells hood decals for $18 a set if you have part numbers.

Ket,
I have painted all three of my Yanmars and each one has taken me about five solid 12 hour days to paint. I disassembled all of the sheet metal from the frame and removed all dirt and feathered all scratches. This seemed to take forever. there seems to be grease soaked dirt everywhere that needs to be removed for a proper paint job. If your going to avoid overspray, like I did, this means more disassembly. Now I know that I probably went too far when I painted all of the plastic parts like headlight bezels, knobs, and dash parts which took time, but when I got started each time, I was SURE that I would be done in two days. Here are a couple of tips for a speeding up the process. #1 Soak all rusted bolts and hardware in an acid metal primer like Jasco Prep and Prime overnight. The next day heavily rusted parts will be free of all rust and ready to prime. #2 Don't remove all the old paint whenever possible. Old paint is the best primer. #3 Anywhere there is a scratch to bare metal is a location for hidden oil or grease to affect the finished paint. Sand the scratch to bare metal and prime. #4 Lacquer thinner is a great solvent to remove hidden grease and oil. Use a vapor mask! # Have fun! Painting a tractor is a fun and rewarding project.
Thanks,
Cameron

Cameron....Wow! That method certainly gets my vote. Now I've got something to shoot for when planning my next paint job.

I'll be cheating a little on the rusted bolts.. I will use sand blast cabinet on those small items

I used to work for a powder coating company. I would take parts from my boat trailers in and the guys on the line would coat them. Boy was that nice. I still have those trailers and the powder coated parts are still perfect. They coated some of the parts with nylon. You can hit that stuff with a hammer and not hurt it. Sure would be nice to have the whole tractor powder coated.

A friend of mine has a couple of beakers of chemicals on the back of his work bench. After he sand blasts a rusty bolt he re-plates it. Doesn't seem to take but a minute...though I don't know anything about the process.

powder coated yanmar.hmmm I like that Idea. I will have to check into that..I got a buddy who can get powdercoating done cheaply .. I 've never heard of coating with nylon but sounds good .. all will depend on cost

The nylon is not as pretty as the polyester and the company only had black on hand. Polyester comes in an amazing array of colors and even some mottled and textured coatings. The local powder coating shop does a lot of auto wheels but they are expensive. If you can get it done cheap look into it.
