I have a pole barn (garage) that my Dad had built in 1992. I noticed that the roof is starting to show some light rusting, but not quite all the way through yet. There are no holes and it does not leak. Has anyone re-painted their roof before? What type of paint did you use? I'm thinking about using that fibered aluminum paint that comes in 5 gallon buckets that I've used on my old galvanized metal barn. Whatever I put on, I want to make sure it lasts for several years before I have to paint again. Any input is greatly appreciated so I don't screw this up.

My neighbor just had his painted this morning. A crew came out painted over the rust a sliver/galvalum Looks fine they were done in a hour or two.

Last year we had our 85 year old roof painted. It had some surface rust. We used Calbar Shower-proof. It did not need priming. So far it looks great. It comes in half a dozen different colors. From what I read it is made for metal roofs.
The problem with the aluminum paint is that it is asphalt based. We had an old barn roof where I worked that we were going to repaint and the painter said it would have to be repainted with an asphalt paint because someone in the past had used it. He also if he did it he would not guarantee how long it would last, maybe only a few years.

The big box stores sell Elastomeric Coating in 5 gal buckets, $69. IIRC. It is white and reflects heat, consistency of pudding. Drys rubber-y.
Brush it, roll it or spray it on, water thin and clean up, dries fairly quick.
I used it on a 36 year old metal mobile home roof with good results. (here in Florida too)

I agree with Stimw about the elastomeric stuff, I've used it and have to say I am impressed. With that written there are many diffferent roof coatings you could go with. I even did a small (out house) roof with rustoleum paint, wanted the colors to match, I did that 4yrs ago and it still looks like new.
