Paint or stain?

We had our barn painted last summer (2001)...couldn't find a stain that was actually red...they were all shades of brown...and we really wanted it red. One coat of primer on the rough oak planks and two coats of Benjamin Moore Heritage Red later we have a really red barn. Too soon to know how long it will last. Picture attached is during the first winter.

Another suggestion is bleaching oil from Cabots etc. Comes in a few colors too. As to application get a 6"x 1 1/2 " brush for siding to work it in after spraying. Another inexpensive way to apply it is with a hand pump garden sprayer set on fine mist then brush it in.

I suspect rough wood will have similar surface properties to the stuco we have around here.

The fastest way to get an even coat is to spray the paint on and follow with a roller. Trying to get material in the cracks with a sprayer wastes a lot of material and rolling the material on takes a long time. Spraying the material on and using a roler to get it everywhere is the common practice on stuco.

As for stain vs paint ... dunno. I would go with stain.
