One thing to do on an outside lock is to have some sort of a flap over it to protect from weather. Saw plenty of leather flaps over locks back in the day. Sometimes the old ways still work in today's world! Just my 2 cents.

I think a leather flap would have a higher Spousal Acceptance Factor than the piece of inner tube that others have mentioned on this thread. It may not last longer but I would.

No reason to get expensive locks. Battery operated cut off tool gets through the best and hardest in seconds. Locks only keep the honest folks honest. I have a set of 8 keyed alike Master locks. Just look through the locks on display and pick out ones with the same number. At Lowes I could have had 12 all the same.

most people don't think of this.. what you said is very true..

You have to be able to get at them though. Our gates have a tab which goes into a piece of 4" pipe with another tab, and the lock fits up inside it. there's no way that you're going to get a cutoff tool up inside of it. Some clown decided to jamb one of our locks, and squirted locktite or some other substance up into the key hole. I had to cut it with a torch, and it was a bit of a challenge since I really couldn't see what I was doing.

I bought three of these last but they were a good $10.00 cheaper, talk about a price hike, MS40 Slide Bolt. The pros are no keys, the cons are they have to be put on just right and have minimal wood movement. Last year I put them on bare wood and the weather would shrink then expand, had to paint the door trim and re-drilled the receiver 2 sizes up, then lubed the dials before winter, after that they stay lined up and working.

Who needs cutoff tools for a lot of locks?

But if you've got a metal building a good battery operated grinder makes great doorways.

Amazon offers your choice of a one-pack, two-pack, three-pack, four-pack or five-pack.

One-pack is $34.32.
All the other sizes work out to $53.96 per lock.

I'd like five of the one-pack, please.

yep, the heavier they are the easier they open with a single hammer blow. They resist the inertia of the hammer better and the locking pawl moves internally.

Or you can use two wrenches:

that will work. that kind of lock is really stupid!. you can easily cut off the rivets with a pair of electricians wire cutters, then remove the cylinder, and use a screwdriver to open the lock. btw, combination locks are similarly stupid, with a pair of electricians wire cutters, you can unfold the crimp on the back of the lock, and open it!..
