Overseeding lawn

Well its' that time a year to overseed my property. The grass, tall fescue, was planted this year and everything is covered however kinda thin IMO.

If your looking any direction but straight down grass looks ok. However looking striaght down there is plenty of dirt showing.

Whats the best way to overseed? Areate, seed and roll it?
I have a clultipacker and a landscape rake, would have to rent a areator. I'm hesitent to try the landscape rake thinking it would tear up what little I have already.

How about cut it short.. overseed, and then drag/roll, if you have a roller.

I haven't overseeded fescue, but I have overseeded Bermuda grass plenty of times when we were living in the SW. I found that spike (not necessarily core or plug) aeration beforehand broke up the soil enough to give the new seed a foothold, w/o tearing up the soon-to-be dormant Bermuda grass. Some folks recommend aerating twice, once before overseeeding, and again after broadcasting--take a look at the section on 'overseeding' here, for example:

On my fescue lawn I usually aerate, going over lawn twice in perpendicular directions, overseed, fertilize, and keep moist for about two weeks.

We're getting lots of rain today and probably rain tomorrow as well. We really needed it too. Saturday should be about perfect to do this.
