I've got a rear PTO on a JD 455 and I'm curious if I should add an overrun clutch when I use a 4' rotary cutter (brush hog). I've looked through the tech. manual and there doesn't appear to be one built in. There is a PTO brake and I'm concerned that trying to stop the rotary cutter will wear that brake out prematurely.

I don't have an overrunning clutch on my MX5 as I prefer to use the engine to slow the cutter rather than letting the cutter coast on. Not sure how the 455 PTO clutch will handle it, but I would think that a simple, gradual scale back of throttle would suffice.

Owning a 455 I can't really imagine a 4' hog behind it on anything other than exceptionally flat ground. I could park my 455 on top of my MX5 and would suspect near the same with a 48" cutter.
