I was told once that the self clean cycle was very hard on an ovens wiring and electronics due to temperature. I recall replacing my mothers early self cleaning wall oven and finding charred wires in the oven and scorched side walls on the oven cabinet. I was surprised it did not start a fire. Understand that was an early model but do you use the self clean cycle or do you do it the old fashioned way with easy off (on a modern oven)?

I have seen charred wires on many ranges. It's mostly those push on connectors that loose contact and make heat. I guess the more heat you have, the more often you do that, the problem would be worse.

The biggest trick is to try and not make a mess in the first place and have one of those drip trays that covers the entire bottom.

I don't have a self cleaning oven but fortunately my cleaning lady is kind of **** about the upkeep of the stove/range. Sometimes I think she spends too much time on it actually!

I won't say that we won't use it on our new range but I would have to stop and think about it. We had a barely ten year old range control unit go bad which was no longer available from the manufacturer. I sent the module off to one of those companies that rebuild them but they could not repair it.

We thought about trying the self-cleaning mode until we read that it takes 2-3 hours. Propane costs $3.64 per gallon so we decided against that. Easy Off is cheap.

We have a 2 y/o "self clean" oven. Never used it. Way too high of a temp. The manual says it can get to 800 degrees. Found it much easier to use the " no fume" spray on cleaner. Much safer. Also Google oven cleaning... A lot of good tips.

Our range is fueled with propane, we replaced it a couple of years ago. The one we had originally was a Maytag, the self clean feature got the oven really clean, it also destroyed the igniter. Igniter replacement cost was about $60-$70. We didn't use it after figuring that out! New range (Samsung) does not destroy the igniter, it also does not get the oven clean. I find that cleaning the oven is not something that I am very concerned with, wipe up spills when they occur a let the other stuff go, life is too short :D.
Have not noticed that the performance of the current range is affected by whether or not it's shiny on the inside or a bit brown. Food tastes the same:licking:

There is the real answer. Step one don't make a mess in the oven in the first place, always use something to catch drips, and step two, if something does make a few drips, don't worry about it. We have a self cleaning oven, but it gets way too hot for way too long. It is scary. I don't think we will ever use that feature again. Beside, our oven is about 26 years old, and just doesn't need stress like that. So our answer is NO, we don't use the self cleaning feature any more.

We pull the racks and run the self clean when needed. Works great for us.

Our gas (propane) fired oven is real close to 10 years old,,
here is a pic of a pizza that came out of that oven.

My wife and I are retired, and one of the things we enjoy is LOTS of cooking, rather than going out to dinner.
In the close to a decade we have been using that stove, the oven has never been cleaned,,,

It is not perfect inside,, but, it is perfectly acceptable to us.
A little care in not spilling, and making the oven dirty,, the oven stays very nice.

The top takes a little effort to clean, but it is easier to clean than the old electric range,,,

We paid about $600 for the range,, I hope Sears is still around when we want to replace it,,,,

Oh, by the way,, after cooking with gas,, we both agree we could never go back to electric,,, stove top, or oven.

Agree with others... don't use the self cleaning function. It is a very high temp bake (higher than the broil temp) that is hard on the wiring. Drip pans and foil and the occasional spill won't hurt the flavor, wallet, or the back, bending over cleaning. :2cents:

CAD, that pizza is calling me to the kitchen for a late night snack!
