Anyone have any experience with OTC pain relievers, aspirin, tylenol or ibuprofren with dogs for joint pain? I can't remember which one the vet had recommended for our last old dog. We have an Lab mix around 14 yrs that has lost a step, time for some chemical intervention.

I can't say for OTC meds but, we give our old Dalmation Previcox. We get 15 227mg tabs at a time and he gets 1/2 tab daily.

Muscle pain is Ibuprofen, joint pain (arthritis) is aspirin.

My wife suggested rimadyl. she is a vet tech. she said an occasional buffered aspirin is ok but tylenol and ibuprofen are toxic and not good to use with dogs.

You might want to read this FDA article about Pain Drugs for Dogs.

We had an old Chocolate lab at a station I was at in Alaska. He had some hip pain and stiffness from what I guess was arthritus. Whenever he went swimming chasing rocks in the nearby swampy spot, he would stiffen up terribly(wimpered when he walked:(). We would give him 2 asprin wrapped in cheese and put him in on a bale of rags in the warm/pre-heated generator room and 2 hours later he would be his normal playfull self...

I do not know about the others but you should not give dogs aspirin. i don't recall the exact reason but it is not good for them. My prefered pain relief for dogs is rimadyl. It is chewable they like it and one tablet last for 24 hours or longer.

From what I've read on the Internet about the side effects and some disagreement among veterinarians about Rimadyl . . . well, it seems some think it's great and some say they won't use it. However, when our Chihuahua had luxating patella surgery, that's what the vet prescribed for her and that's what we used. No obvious side effects in our case.

I've had several dogs on Rimadyl with no issues. Seems like I've heard there are some breeds though that it can kill pretty regularly.
BTW buffered aspirin is used a lot for dogs.
Acetamenophine (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil) are not recommended for dogs.
