Well this thread got me thinking.

I remembered walking through lowes last week and looking at grills.

I ran across one called Char Griller 5050 Duo. This is a combo grill, one side is gas, and one side is charcoal. You can add a smoker on the charcoal side and a burner on the gas side.

Now I'm not going to say it will come anywhere close to the BGE, but for $400 or so it is within my price range.

Has anybody got one of these? And what do you think?

Another vote for the Primo.
It has a lot more cooking area than the egg.
First liner cracked and they sent another. Good support if you need it.

Cooks great and is easy on the charcoal.

Can you use the briquet's or do you have to use the lump coal? the lump coal is not always available around here and is a little expensive.
Though I read the coal seems to last longer in the Egg than regular grills, read on that site one load of coal can cook for all day or longer?

Even the big Egg doesn't seem that large and may not be suitable for a large picnic.

JB.

You "can" use briquettes, but once you get in the habit of using lump, I don't think you will. Look at the Naked Whiz site that I linked earlier and look at his lump charcoal database. In it there's an article about what's in "briquettes". It's a little alarming. I don't know where you heard that lump is more expensive than briquettes. I'm not sure I buy that. I pay about 50 cents per pound for lump ($5 for a 10 pound bag), and it is supposed to be one of the best on the market (Ozark Oak). If I'm doing a lot of cooking, which I do most of the year, I'll go through 3 or 4 bags a month.

It's surprising how much you can put on a Large BGE. That said, it's better suited to a dinner party than it is a block party. That's why the old Weber kettle is in the barn instead of the landfill.
