OSHA at work?

There would be way less people throwing guards in the burn pile if they were all made like this. This guard is actually steel, and not the usual plastic crap. image-1569196581.jpg

I disagree. One moderate impact, the tube is dented, won't telescope, ends up in the scrap pile.
That tube is at least 60 years old. I bet you can't find a plastic tube half that old. The tube is pretty thick, I couldn't hit it hard enough with a 16 oz hammer to interfere with its use.

Pretty safe bet there aren't many 30 year old plastic driveline shields. 30 years ago they were all metal. I have an old SQ72 with a perfect plasticshield. Its probably approaching 20 years old.

I don't have anything against plastic tubes. I hate the huge collar that covers the U joint making it very difficult to hook up.

This reminds me of the scene in The Graduate where Walter Brooke's character takes Ben aside at his graduation party to say just one word: "Plastics". That was almost 40 years ago. And he was right!

The factory shield on the JD brush hog that came with our 1983 JD 950 was plastic, so I think your statement is wrong

I can hear the blades spinning. I really don't see how you could get tangled in a bush hog pto shaft. It is between all three 3pt arms. Why in the heck would you be down there anyway?

Does not being safe come down to common sense and not being in a hurry? If the tractor is not running and you are the only one around why should the key be in your pocket? Do utility tractors now have remote start? I leave the key in the tractor all the time and it has never self started.

On the other hand I hire a guy to help me on occasion. He is OCD. All bets are off when he is around. I keep him off the tractor at all times. He does great with a rake or shovel or weed eater.
