"Organic" a Scam or Fraudulent Phrase?

The reason they don稚 want to label them is that so many people have been brainwashed into thinking that GMO foods are in some way not healthy. They shouldn稚 HAVE to worry about it, but people are sheep these days, and will believe anything printed on the internet.

Well said! MANY times I will read the actual study when one hits the press. Who sponsored the study? How many people hear believe that a large corporation giving $10-20K to a grad student to perform a study will get a result that is not favorable? There is so much crap "science" out there it's sickening.

This is true. So much crap science. Who are we to say whether they are safe or not. All we can do is base our opinions on the information that is published on the subject. There's likely crap science on both sides. Your statement about people being "brainwashed" and "sheep" would read just fine on the other side of the argument too, don't ya know.

For years and years, eggs and butter were bad, margarine was good, according to "science" then it turned out that margarine is full of trans fats, which are simply awful for you. Science and industry had no problem selling that junk to us as food for decades. Why are GMOs any different. These guys are not to be trusted...

The farm I used to work at as a kid raises and sells beef. They've started using the phrase "hand raised beef" in their marketing.

Pretty clever marketing, as they don't try to pass off their product as being organic, antibiotic or drug free. Instead, the phrase conveys that the animals are appropriately cared and treated on an individual basis instead of mass treatments.

I wonder if you could use the term "hand raised vegetables"?

I'm one who usually pays close attention to labels, prices, etc. But today, I stopped at Kroger's with my wife and her sister along and got distracted. I just discovered that I paid double for a couple of packages of raw vegetables because I didn't notice that little tiny label "organic" on the packages.

I sure raised a lot of those hand raised vegetables when I was a kid. Long rows of vegetables and a hoe. "now son, when I get home, I expect the entire garden to be hoed, and watered.".. yep.

We did a tour of the Hudson Ming Bison site a while back and the tour guide asked if we wanted an organic water bottle. I sat there with a puzzled look on my face until he explained that the indians used organic water bottles which were actually Bison bladders.

So if you want to 1 up the Colorado hipsters tell them you use an organic free range water bottle.

I can see both sides of this debate but I do think that more and more people want to know where thier food comes from and how it got there. I suspect there are some benefits as well as drawbacks to "organic" vegetables but overall I could see them being better for you as the almighty dollar will make people modify genetics and whatever other means of chemicals that are necessary to increase production at the expense of the land and water.

Another thing we need to watch is the source of many food products.
The packer or factory might just be local but where was that food grown?
I learned that just about all apple juice, jelly was imported but generally labeled as regional. (bulk importation, packed locally and meeting regs for labeling)
Many countries don't really worry me but a few really do. (think melamine contaminates etc)
Chinese baby formula would be scary while I'd buy Moroccan marmalade, (example)
One problem arises in that few local (US or CDN) producers can supply the volumes that the big box stores want. The off shore guys will fill that gap.

Would it be safe to say that a steer was "hand raised beef" if one swatted it on the hind end as it went thru the slaughter shoot.:confused3:
