WELCHES A missing hiker found dead in the Mount Hood National Forest was killed in a suspected cougar attack, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Wildlife officials said it would be the first fatal cougar attack in the wild in Oregon history.

Sightings are becoming more and more common here. They caught one on camera, not 20 miles from where we live. I also had a fleeting sighting on the edge of the creek behind my house; right color, right size, but it was only for a couple of seconds going away, so I can't be sure...but with all the deer we have, I'm sure they are around. Bob cats are fairly common.

Thoughts/prayers for family.

On the evening news last night show bear coming up over bank swiftly walk towards family than veer off,some forget were in there back yard and there no rules.

I read an article on a cougar/mountain lion attack many years ago. The two wildlife biologists who investigated said - many of theses attacks are from wildlife - cougars, bears, coons. etc - that are in one way or another injured. Injured and hurting long before their encounter with humans - so they could well be in a more aggressive attack mode just because of injuries.

Whatever - certainly is not natural behavior.
