I like to order my parts online. The biggest reason for this is conveniance. I also like the fact that I can order any time of day or night. It also seems that everytime I need something where ever I go, I'm always told they have to order whatever I need, so I just skip the middleman. I'm just wondering if anyone else buys parts online and why.

Thanks Jay, but I'm not looking for dealers. I'm wondering why people order from online dealers.

I order on-line because of the convienence and frequently price. As Solo said I can do it when I want and get it delivered to the door. The nearby cities of Bryan and College Station are small - about 150,000 total. Add 40,000+ college students when Texas`A & M is in session and shopping there is a pain and hard to find what you need.

I have found that for small stuff with deals on the internet sites that shipping is no more than the sales tax would be or free. We have bought large appliances on-line too. Got them quicker than the local appliance store could order in the models we wanted. Unloaded them with the forks on the tractor!

My wife shops for fabrics on-line for better selection. When she started this suddenly she was eager for me to go wireless for high speed internet. :)

My nearest Kubota dealer is 35 miles away and now I only have to go there to buy transmission fluid.

Our local shopping is almost limited to groceries and small parts. Even with small parts if it is not critical I will make up a combined order for the internet to keep shipping reasonable.

When you say parts, what do you mean. If I need a part that has to come from Ford I go to Messicks . The reason I like them is you can look up your parts and get the prices anytime day or night. They are also cheaper than my local CNH dealer. If you are talking about small things like top link pins I would think shipping would make it not reasonable to order online.

For the same reasons you listed in your first post.

Deere has a pretty nice web site for ordering parts online. It's tied into your e-mail so you know when the parts are available (or the dealer calls me).

One does need to know enough about their tractor to order the correct parts.

I've done online ordering through Deere's site for 3 or 4 years now. Most of what I order are filters and such or items I wanted to add on to the tractor (a right side fender grab handle, for example). The 790 has been quite reliable.

The latest thing I ordered was a new surface element for our stove top. At the local appliance parts store(20 miles one way) it would cost 93.00 plus tax. I looked at several parts sites online and found one for 72.00 and with shipping almost 80.00. It was delivered in two days.
We do lots of Christmas shoping online big and small items. Lots of free delievery . We order prints on line and do online banking. For me it's just Convenient-Convenient-Convenient.

I usually order tractor parts online. I like the ability to compare prices.

However the web is not always the cheapest. Needed a Radiator for my Subaru, online was $135 plus S&H, seemed to be the best prices from online dealers. Found it at O'Reileys locally for $105, lifetime warranty.

Everything has to be shipped up here... I can't drive to the area trailer manufacturing plant and buy a new cargo/equipment trailer, etc., etc.

So, I'm always looking for a way to keep the cost of a part or the total cost including shipping costs down.

The JD online parts gives me a price comparison point. My local dealer knows this and they will throw my order into their monthly or biweekly freight order.

No freight charge and they'll meet the online price from JD.

So, I do shop online but I don't necessarily buy online.

If your thinking you can order online to Kubota, Case, New Holland or John Deere your thinking wrong. None of them manufactures sells parts to the public as far as I know. They have dealers for a reason, you have to order your parts from the dealers online or not. Just because your ordering online does not remove the middle man.

Assuming I correctly understood Solo, he was looking for reasons why people order online. He was not looking for dealers to order from nor was he looking to order directly from the mfgr.

This was once a thriving AG region where I live. Now it's becoming one great big housing development. 35(+) years ago, there was 3 Massey Ferguson dealer, 2 Ford, 1 Allis Chalmers, 4 John Deere, and several "short line" dealers with-in a 1/2 hour drive. Now we're down to a John Deere "Lawn & Garden dealer, a Massey dealer that's biding his time until retirement, and a New Holland dealership, a Kubota dealer, and a couple used junk dealers with-in an HOURS drive.(each way) Parts used to be on the shelf. Nowdays they stock filters and hats. Anything major comes from a central parts depot.

Enter Al Gores internet! I can email any number of dealers and a few discount parts houses with part #'s and/or descriptions of what I need and UPS/FED EX/USPS shows up at the door with my parts in as little as 1 day in some cases with parts in hand. Go after them myself and I need to go order, come home, drive back AGAIN to pick up, then drive home AGAIN, burning that ever increasingly expensive fossil fuel.

For "dealer only" hard parts, I'd highly recommend having a parts manual for whatever it is you'll be needing to order parts for. Give them the # and that way you don't have to trust to luck that they looked up the right #.

Long story short, it's QUICKER, CHEAPER, EASIER, and just all 'round BETTER than doing things the old fashioned way.

I've never ordered tractor parts online. I just pick up the phone and call my dealer. He'll tell me if the part is in stock or he'll have to order it. If it has to be ordered it's usually there by the next day. Then I have my wife drive by and pick it up since her work is about 2 miles away. There's a guy that works there that drives by my place going and coming from work. I've had him drop off parts for me a few times but it wasn't tractor parts.

Reason's for shopping online:
  1. Convenience.
  2. Wide Selection
  3. Convenience
  4. Easy price comparison
  5. Convenience
  6. Less time spent running around trying to find what I'm looking for
  7. Convenience
So much of my purchasing is done online that my wife has begun to suspect that I'm having an affair with the UPS delivery lady.

Balancing sales tax against delivery charges is not an option. You do declare your online (sales tax not collected at point of sale) purchases on your state income tax return and pay the sales tax due at that time, don't you?

Now that I've read the post correctly (Thanks, MikePA), it a matter of convenience for me. My dealer is about 25 miles away. He calls or e-mails when the part(s) come in. At almost $3/gallon of gas...online shopping is quite efficient!

For other things...CD's, electronics, etc...mostly a matter of cost or availability (a lot of the CD's I like are oldies and may not be available at a music store...but Amazon has most of them).
I'll also buy outerwear (coats and jackets) online (again, convenience) from places such as Cabela's and Filson (plug: if you want a fine quality coat, go to Filson. Tough and long lasting stuff!)

So where's the best internet site that offers discount for J.Deere parts?

I'm 17 miles from town. That's at least 2 gallons of gas in the truck (one gallon on the bike, too long on the horse) round trip (if I can find what I want and they have it in stock at a reasonable price). At 3+ bucks a gallon I'll pay the frieght and save the drive time along with wear and tear on the truck for most small stuff unless I need to go to town for some reason. I just got a $3.48 seal in the mail today $7.00 shipping/handling. AAA says the aveage cost per mile was 52.2 cents last year. 34 X .522 = $18.77. Took two days and I figure I saved money over going to pick it up. I always got some some other "project" to work one while waiting for stuff.

At least Texas does not have an income tax although I am not sure that is a good thing or not. We are supposed to report and pay the sales taxes to the state Comptroller but no private individual ever does. Businesses generally have to.

So the offset of shipping against sales tax is valid in Texas and I take advantage of it a lot. I recently had to buy a new antenna rotator to replace a malfunctioning one. It came to $95.00 delivered vs $140 + tax for local purchase (special order). Rat-Shack and a local independent electronics dealer were within a few dollars of each other.

I saved dollars, time and wear and tear on a vehicle. Said vehicle is a large SUV (Suburban) that I will never give up. That and a pickup are the only vehicles that I can drive safely and comfortably due to my height.
