I need to put in a small pig pen. The ground is on a slope. With where it is located readymix is just not an option. My thoughts at the moment are to build foundation walls, fill and compact to within three inches of the top, put in some black poly, drop a mesh and then hand mix and lay the base as six separate segments (handmixing).

Does this seem reasonable or does anyone have any better ideas ?

Thanks.

I'm not trying to be a wise *****, but you know pigs like mud, right? Our pig pens were dirt.
What you're describing will work, if you mix fast enough to avoid cold joints in the slab. You could also use paver blocks.

Very timely topic! I've been mulling this same project over. I've decided I will never raise pigs in the mud pen again. Just too much mess and it's impossible to get in there and feed and attend to the pigs. We do get quite a bit of rain here in Oregon!

I've kicked around some sort of plank floor but there will still need to be a way to clean under it. Concrete really comes back as the best option but I don't look forward to mixing 60 bags of it.

You say ready mix is not an option ... how close can the truck get to it? A FEL bucket will transport from the truck to the pen ... otherwise some companies rent portable units that can haul a yard at a time behind your pickup ... looks like the big trucks on a small scale.
