kenmac,

you answered my big question in the last paragrapgh of my first response, on how much towing and hauling. For you not much, and since you are down south, I failed to notice that the first time, there are no mountains to worry about.

You also have the hard numbers not MSRP, now to make up $9,000 in initial cost and in those extra interest payments that become huge.

try this:

average miles driven per year divided by MPG = total gallons used times cost of the fuel

do this for both how much you run emprty and how much you will be towing, for both the gas and diesel version. Add up the costs and make a decision, is the extra power worth it to you or not? Also how long do plan you keep the truck, needs to be factored in.

BTW my 2003 dually Cummins, empty 60mph will do 20-21 mpg, 70 mph 15-16 mpg. towing tractor (trailer implements and all about 10,000) 70mph 13-14 mpg, 60 mph 15-16 mpg.

towing a big square lots of wind resistance toy hauler camp trailer, I believe we were just over 22,000 pounds on the truck scales, going 70 mph I got 12-13 mpg, on a 700 mile trip or so in winter, going over a few mountain passes.

MPG varies with speed and load, so ask when you get numbers from people.

I thank all that responded . I have to make a decision & it ain't easy. My heart says get the diesel but, my mind says that for I'll be using it for just ain't worth the x-tra. The diesel here today has gone up to $1.70 per gal . The truck will not be an every day driver as I have a small gas saver for this.

Hey inline diesel . I see you are a firefighter. My son is a firefighter ( & loves it) He is now in medic class.I just don't think I would like going into a burning house or building but, my hats off to all that have the nerve to do that job.

Don't be so quick to talk yourself out of a diesel. Once you go diesel you'll NEVER go back to gas.
I think if you beat the dealer up a little you can knock some of that 9k off.
If in your heart of hearts you WANT a diesel. then get a diesel. We all work mighty hard and if a Diesel makes you happy - go for it. It's not like you blowing it at a casino. Besides resale is where you make it back.
I went for the Dually Duramax, and that was two years ago, and you still can't wipe the smile off my face.
Five minutes behind the wheel, and you will never ever think about the cost of the motor, I promise you that.

If the hemi will get 14-15 MPG, you might think about it for $9000 less. I had an 03 dodge diesel that got 17-18MPG, traded it for an 05 and it gets 13.5 mpg (running empty). Took it back several times for Dodge to check it, no improvement. Service dept. says "they all get about that (04 and up models),
several friends with them confirm this. I've drove diesels (Ford and Dodge) for 20 years, but I may be about done. Diesel 20-30 cents above PREMIUM gas, poor mpg, several thousand higher to buy (I know you get sooooome of that back at trade in), $60 oil changes, $700 water pumps. and on and on. If you can get better non towing MPG and planty of power with a hemi, whats the point?

You didn't say if the truck was Dually or not, but $36,000.00 seems a bit much for the Truck. If you aren't going to keep the Truck around for a long time. Don't get the diesel. If you're in it for the long term. I'd go for the diesel.

My F350 has close to 400,000 miles and still going strong......

Right now you might get some of it back at trade in, but I sense that is going to change. I have a feeling that the conditions you describe above are about to weed out people who don't really need a diesel (myself included). If that happens, a bunch of diesels are going to be on the market. May not be pretty.

The EPA and oil companies are combining to make it undesireable to own a diesel any more.

I have an 04 Chevy Duramax. I love it and have not had any problems with it. That being said I now add additive to my fuel (due to the low sulphur fuels, thanks al gore) and oil changes are more expensive, but you can go twice as long as normal engines. I do some towing, but it is not my living. I plan on keeping it until it rots out from beneath me, so I would do it over again. Once you go diesel, you will never go gas. As far as fuel economy, buying an aftermarket chip can greatly increase your MPG.
