I am on the hunt for a New and or Newer used Diesel 3/4 ton 4x4 truck. Just wanted to know if anyone had any opinions on the particular brands. I am kinda leaning towards the new quieter Dodge Cummins or the New Ford 6.0 powerstroke with the new tranny. I have been looking used also but they are hard to come by it seems. Any thoughts or opinions will be greatly appreciated from all the folks here at TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jason,

My next truck will be the ford diesel, but I haven't decided on the 7.3 or the 6.0.

I currently have an F150, but drive/ride in my cousin's 250 with the 7.3. This engine never ceases to amaze me.

I work with a Ford dealership and was talking to the owner--he said the new 6.0 has "noticeably" more power than the 7.3. The 6.0 is supposed to be quieter. If I was to buy today, I'd probably go with the 7.3 as it's about as bullet proof as you can get and the 6.0 hasn't been out that long.

As you can probably see--I'm a Ford guy so I will let the Dodge crowd chime in. I like the Dodge trucks, just never owned or driven one enough to comment.

All I can say is I would be happy to own anyone of them. I like them all and if I was in a contest and won a new Chevy, Dodge, or Ford diesel truck, I'd be thrilled. Know of any contests? I think I would prefer to go with a manual however, I think?

Yeah I currently have a 2000 F150 also. Only 36000 miles on her but it seems like you can really tell your pulling something especially when braking and on steep hills. It has the 5.4 engine and this has been a good one....I just don't feel so safe pulling stuff with it.
But man o man are New trucks expensive.

Rat,
I drove the new 6.0 Ford Powerstroke with the new 5 speed Auto and it had the Tow/Haul feature which was really nice it changed all your shift points. And seemed to shift much better. It was very noticable when slowing down as it would downshift to a very low gear to help stop your load. Very nice feature in my opinion. I have heard alot of guys say though they like the Manual especially pulling really heavy loads.

From what we've seen around here, the new PowerStroke 6.0 is the top dog anyway you slice it. From what I understand, it's an extra $1k over the 7.3L PowerStroke. The GM Duramax (built here in Flint, MI) would be the second choice.

You can't keep em in stock because they are all over here in California. I do believe there is a car or truck for every man, woman, child and bug in California Rat...

The new 6.0 from Ford sounds interesting.

The Cummins in the Dodge is a proven performer and the new found quietness is a definite bonus

The Chevy /GMC, like the Ford is also an interesting diesel.

I do like how much quieter they all are. I'll bet if I went to a driveup window I could even leave the engine running while ordering. Rat...

I couldn't believe how much quieter the new cummins Engines were. I was holding a normal conversation with the salesman standing in front of it while it was running with the hood up. They claim its 60% quieter than before and I believe it.
I read somewhere that they figured out how to quiet it down by using more fuel per cycle or something like that and it takes away most of the famous knock and rattle its famous for. I still like the sound of a diesel engine though. It just makes em sound tough. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But not so loud you can't hear your tunes or the person next to you.
