open up Hydraulic cylinder on Massey M 2375

Howdy,
I need to repair a hydraulic cylinder on the foot of my 2375 backhoe. I was able to unscrew the cover but it does not form a cap. I suspect this must be some form of retainer ring but I cannot see any ring. Anyone have any good pictures or direction to take one of these apart?

Post a picture of your cylinder. There are only a few ways to make `em. Someone will know.

I saw no evidence of any sort of retainer ring in the now exposed channel.

Did you look inside there?

All of my cylinders have the cap with threads (on the cap) and once it's off like yours, I can take it apart. I've never seen your type setup.

Not seen that type before either. Is there a groove on the backside we can't see?

I agree to clean up that recess and look for some kind of clip.

Without damaging the threads, try push the gland to the inside of the cylinder. It should reveal a clip that you'll need to pull out. After that you can just pull the rod out.

Will the threaded part push in? There may be a large snap ring in there.

Usually the way these cylinders work is, they have a groove for a snap ring/clip, the gland will have a chamfer and the nut will pull the gland against the snap ring to keep it place.

Looks like a o ring is still in there. Remove it and you might see snap clip under the o ring.

Yes, but before poking the gland back in make sure you drain cylinder, then pull hyd rod all the way out to bottom out against the gland.....then push in the gland (and rod) just enough to expose the round retainer ring inside. If you don’t pull the hyd rod out you run the risk of the gland covering the port and it might hold air enough to be hard to slam the assy out.
