Running lean, or running with retarded ignition timing will have the exhaust mighty hot.

Something to check if you don't observe anything else.

Thanks! Not sure how to adjust a lean condition with fuel injection.... Ignition timing might be adjustable, tho..

Right from JD.

So you have owned it for something like 17-25 years? Maybe something in the history will be a clue to the melting of the grill.

Do you have the service tech manual?

hahaha More like 17 days! Actually, I bought it back in June, so have had it a couple of months now... Yes, I did buy the tech manual on cd. It's a pain to use like that, but better than nothing.. Wish now I'd paid extra and got the print copy!

See if a print shop will print out the manual. There are printers that will print both sides of a page and "drill" for either a 3 to 5 ring binder or for various "spiral" bindings.
It will probably cost about $0.20-0.25 a two sided page, but not sure.
