So what are you saying John? You didn't bleed all over your new knife, did you? ;)

I can see myself doing that while practicing with my new knife. :D

Bingo!

BTW, this was an impulse buy. From the sounds of these posts, I should have done some research.

They sell those one handers at walmart for .94. Not a bad knife, sharp enough, and I don't feel bad when I lose it, or haveta cut wire with it, or when I throw it at a stupid squirrel in my garden or...

I've carried a Benchmade 154cmbk auto for a long time. I view a knife much like a power tool, I need it to work every time efficiently. The auto open is awsome if you're in a hurry and need 1 hand fast opening. Benchmade is a great company to deal with and their construction is second to none, also a big fan of Emerson karambit combat knife. this is a folding knife that deploys blade upon removing from pocket.

John,
think of it as a learning experience.
does it do what you wanted it to?
do you feel you're getting your $$ worth out of it?
if yes, you did good.
if not, hopefully it was cheap enough that the lesson doesn't hurt.

I've spent close to 25 years carrying different knives looking for what fits me best and I still find new things on a regular basis - why should you feel bad you're trying new things out? (and yes, I tend to consider buying a new knife for a "test drive" research -- if it works good, I'll carry it until it's lost, broken, or I trade it for something different. If it doesn't do what i want it goes on the shelf, in a toolbox, or finds a new owner. Occasionally I've been known to give the knife in my hand to a friend or family member who seems to like it more than I do.

OK, I have never owned an auto open knife because I have visions of this razor-sharp implement springing open in my pocket, right next to my little buddy, when I bend over or something. God knows I have pressed the alarm on my car clicker often enough that way.

How do the auto open knives prevent this?

My Benchmade has a safety on it that will prevent the button that releases the blade from being pressed. Also, the button is in a recess and it takes some pressure to press that button down. I never have mine on SAFE and it has never just opened on it's own.

Mine has not opened either without safety on. The safety is nice if carried in a sheath but not with the pocket clip. You would be hard pressed to get the activator button pressed by accident due to rigid design.

I agree.. mine has a slide lock safety.. without the safety slid down, and GOOD pressure onthe button.. it don't open..

I never keep em in a pocket anyway.. I use the belt clip. in a pinch if i need a fast open knife.. I need it as fast access.. not 'wait a minute while I fish this here knife outta my pocket'...
