On-the-fly 4wd?

/ On-the-fly 4wd? #21
I had a couple hundered yards if wood chips dropped at the top of my driveway this winter. I've been loading them into my dump trailer and hauling them to the far back of my property (filling in muddy areas).. My drivreway is 1000' asphalt and make a turn at about 600'. A few times I forgot to unock 4WD after loading and buzzed down the driveway. It was unnoticable on the straight part but when I hit the curve in the driveway it popped out of 4WD (THANK GOD).
I feel very blessed that it allowed itself to pop out rather than snap something ... Scozz

Scozz,

My KAMA 454 would pop out too but while grading snow off the drive. I could feel it and notice the lack of traction (steep hill). I did not like the idea of the final moments of engagement! Now I use a Hi-tech method to keep it engaged, bungee cord!

Patrick,
You can probably put a stiffer spring behind the detent ball that holds the shift rail in posisiton and use that bungee cord elsewhere. The detent ball, spring and spacer pin are in a hole just under the shifter cover. But sometimes the easy fix is all these chinese tractors need to be useful /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Patrick,
Mine did the same thing...worked itself out of 4wd without knowing it. I didn't want to rely on the spring loaded plunger and detent adjustment to keep it in, so I made an aluminum bracket to keep the lever in either 2wd or 4wd positively. It has a knob that can be unscrewed to allow the lever to be re-positioned.
