?on Cat D8 engine oil filters -

Was going over our oil filter charts here at work and noticed we are buying Napa 1161 filters for our cat D8 ( takes 2 - cartridge canister types)
From Napa, those list as transmission filters.

going back to the original cat # of: 5S484 I find lots of crosses... donaldson, fram, baldwin, napa, wix, and **many** others.

About half of them mention HD full flow 'lube' filter, and half mention one or both of hyd or transmission application.

Looking at the cartridge specs, seems to be pretty uniform across the manufactures, no matter what number you use.

Should I be finding a different cartridge other than this 1161 ??

From looking at our paper charts ( putting them in a computer database is how I found this )... we have been doing this for a loooooooong time.. so obviously the napa tranny cartridge hasn't killed the D8 in the last 20 years..

1R0659 is the current number from the old 5S0484 number. Try that number in your cross reference between manufactures. As long as the micron rating of the filter media is close to stock,and the flow is sufficient, it should be fine. Those old CAT's are pretty durable, assuming it is a D8H?
There were other numbers that have long since changed to the newer 1R0659, which were used in transmission and clutch systems.
Nothing wrong with with using good filters, you don't want the filter to go to bypass.

Yup, 1R0659 also crosses to a Napa 1161..

Guess its not gonna kill her after decades of use.
