The keel was wood (oak) with 1" copper pins (rods) driven to hold it in place. No other iron criss-crossed in the keel that I have read about. The sides did have copper cladding to ward off the marine borers.

I was thinking that if it was anything like my homebrew, they might have been well nourished while it lasted....but somewhat fuddled! I tend toward the British style ales rather than the newer Germans style lagers since they're easier for me to make. However, a pint of anything I brew will keep you warm through a long winter night. It's really hard to imagine functioning with that as your normal beverage. They did have something called small beer, which was usually lower in alcohol, but it had to be consumed pretty soon after brewing because it wouldn't keep. I think they might have brewed that themselves, but it wouldn't have travelled well enough to make the voyage. Maybe they had better livers.
