OK HERE GOES NOTHING ...NEWBEE HAYER IN THE FIELDS HELP!!!

:laughing: OK so I finally found all my equipment to buy , I ended up with a 477 Haybine, A NH side rake and a NH Baler with a belt thrower.... after spending a lot of money I want to make sure this stuff lasts anything I should do before I used them?? I oiled all the chains and greased all the fittings, at least the ones I found, anything else they all seem to run smooth. I will be pulling these with my 870 Case tractor.
Also how fast should I run the tractor RPM and Speed? Anything I should look for while I cut or bale?? Thanks for all the help I have never done this before... I have about 30 acres to bale.

Run the implements at 540 rpm on the PTO, that's what they were designed for. I usually start out a little under that, and when I'm convinced that all the pieces that are going to fly off already are gone, I put it right up to the rated speed.

Cutting hay especially first cutting, always seems to be a compromise between volume and quality. Generally speaking, the longer it grows, the more hay you will have, but the more mature it is when you cut it, the lower the quality. Depends a lot on who you're selling it to, and the kind of hay you're cutting. Experience would be a good thing to tap into here, either a helpful neighbor, or maybe the local extension service?

DAVE, thanks for the link to the post that will help out a ton.....do you know at what rpm's in the engine would make the PTO turn 540?? Im kinda in need here for the answer so I can pick the best gear to run in

My Tractor has the "540" pto RPM marked on the Tach, (somewhere north of 2000 rpm) so Ill just go by that when I do mine.

Im some what perplexed by what gear I should be in too....

I know im going to use "Low" range, but 2nd gear is real slow, so im gonna try 3rd or 4th see how that does. I guess slower is better, but too slow and Ill be there for weeks.

Im going to do a cut at the End of June/early July, normally they only do one cut here up north, and its usually late july. Im looking for higher quality and lower quantity.

Also....make sure you have a few extra cutting teeth and rivets for your hay bine's cutting bar. An extra tooth guard or two is a good idea as well.

Do you have a manual for your equipment? if not you can read some online, I have to read them over yet, I figure its good to know the details on the Bailer especially.

Lastly, the warnings (all good), be safe, never get off the tractor with the PTO running this equipment, and remember that at some point something will break/not work - just roll with it, dont get too frustrated, its just the nature of the old equipment (I have to keep repeating this one to myself...I like stuff to go smoothly )

My tach cable broke last year and so I will have to guess until I buy a new one..Do you know where I can get a lubrication chart for the haybine and baler,I greased every fitting I founf but I want to make sure I dont miss anything, grease is cheap lol

You'll hear this reply over and over and over again here on TBN, and no matter how many times you hear it, it's still good advice: Get the manuals.

concerning rpms... alot of that is by feel -- i know some people who run theirs over the 2k mark, but the tractors and implements are really whining at that speed. i have always found a good speed for everything - from 15ft batwings - to haycutters - to balers and so worth to be around 17-1800rpms...speed primarily depends on volume of hay you are dealing with-- cutters/haybines can go a lot faster than you would normally think-- bushogging kinda just drags along....go too fast raking and you will tear up your rake....you can go fairly fast with the baler, but then again that depends on your baler and the volume of hay---
use air on the chains and such to clean them-- not a pressure washer

as far a lube charts-- just use common sense-- look for u joints and on the pickup and rollers there may be slots for the fittings/zerts for the baler....

RPMs - without the tach working you're mostly guessing - don't count on two tractors being the same...

On the baler, however, one thing you can do is find out how many strokes/minute the baler is spec'd at - that will be at 540 RPM on the PTO. So when you get it running at that many strokes/min, you're tractor PTO is turning at 540 RPM

Beeferman and everyone else thanks for all the help...One last question my fields are about 12" tall now maybe a little less I see you are from MA , when should I cut or how tall? I knwo you said quality vs quantity .I have a few horses of my own so majority will be goign to them I may sell a few bales to a farmer down the road who has cows... so whats your best guesstimate ? I promise I wont hold you to it I just need an idea to start from Thanks Again
