Update. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

We won't talk about game 2. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Game three back here tomorrow. The roof of Rexall will be rockin! If we don't take game three...it's all over but the golfing I'd say.

I went to games 1 & 2 in Raleigh. Having been to hundreds of hockey games and previous Stanley Cup Finals, the atmosphere in the arena Monday night was great and as loud as I've ever heard. I live in Northern Virginia but have work in Raleigh so can go there as needed- at the start of the playoffs, decided to buy a playoff ticket there, just in case my Dallas Stars made it to the finals- well, that didn't work out but since the Canes made it, made the trip and had a great time.

Really disappointed that Roloson is hurt, if the remaining games were or are anything like the first one, it would be quite a series- I'm hoping the return to Edmonton will make a difference. Must admit, a return to Raleigh for a game 7 would be a lot of fun!

On a side note, at the airport yesterday for my return, saw Don Cherry and Ron McLaren on their way to catch an Air Canada flight to Toronto- couldn't miss the collar on Don's shirt from 100 yards away. They said they enjoyed the games and hospitality in Raleigh.

Looking forward to watching on NBC the rest of the way.

( the only comparison I can draw is that hockey is to Canada like what basketball is to N.C. )

Would agree.

( I'll go out on a limb. Canada "is" hockey. It would be a shame for Canada to lose to N.C. in hockey. )

Don't think it would be much of shame though. Looks like to me from what I have read in the paper that most of the 'canes players are from Canada.

Hey, somebody say NASCAR?!?! Let me put my fishing pole down with the Tarheel commerative spinner and finish my turkey sandwich so we can talk serious now..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To some extent you "proved" my point.

Guess it goes "deeper" in debate to "just who may be the best team".

Remember 1980 and hockey? How could you not if you were around at that time. AMERICANS beat the best team in the world. I'd haphazzard (sp?) a guess and say not many of those college boys played in schools down "south".

Remember when the U.S "dream team" lost in the Olympics? Who really cares in the U.S? To those in the world who did beat us, I guess it meant a lot.

Getting off the track to some extent.

I remember growing up on the border (sp?) of New Brunswick, watching my dad and his buddies play the Canadians in a "loose" games of hockey OUTSIDE on the weekends. Those Canadians would be drunk off their butts and still whoop the "Americans" even if they (the Americans)didn't drink. Guess my point, (not very well made) is that to alot of Canadians, hockey is an "everyday" game that is played not only for the compition but for the fun of the game as well. They also don't have to have "indoor" rinks to play in the winter! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It is a pasttime, and a "national sport", to whereas "most americans", who REALLY cared that the NHL went on strike?

Who REALLY watches hockey on a regular basis in the U.S? Granted, if you are a hockey fan, you do, but I'd guess that hockey has the least amount of attendance at professional games compared to baseball or basketball, and I'd guess that the T.V ratings would be the same.

You can't say the same for Canada.

Heck, they are all a bunch of OVERPAID people who may oflost sight of the "real" meaning of the sport, other than a paycheck.

Ok, rant mode off! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Look out for them Tarheels this year! (hey, I wen't to Penn State, I really don't care! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

only 3 players from the 1980 olympic team played at all in the NHL and only 1 stayed for a career
only 12% of the players in the NHL are american born
10 years ago it was 6%
over 70% of 1A collage scholarships go to Canadian players
years ago if you were a skilled, promising determined young teenager with an eye on collage or pro hockey you would need to leave home at say 14 and play in the canadian youth leagues, then play canadian juniors. Then get drafted or awarded a scholarship.
This is slowly changing MN has a outstanding High schools hockey program

and by the way , how can anyone be considered overpaid if someone is willing pay you, recruit you to come to his team

Since I refuse to go attend any professional sporting events, and really don't watch sports on T.V, figure I could call them overpaid! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I do however think that hockey is one of the most demanding sports to learn and play.

Thinking about this, it hit me that professional sports athletes (sp?) are more of an entertainer than anything else. Thats why I suppose they can get paid what they do, because people are willing to pay to watch them.

Sigarms,
Good points - I agree with you in regards to watching people play for the "love of the game and competition" vs. a paycheck. Heck, I enjoy watching my nephew's little league and JV basketball games more than pros - definitely more than pro basketball.

Also, understand my "shame" comment was in direct support of what you were saying. As disheartening as a loss would be for Canada in their national sport to a North Carolina team, they should be proud of the fact that the 'canes had to win with Canadian players - trying to find a little silver lining. No knocks, dis-respect, criticism or cynicism (sp?) intended with that comment.

Now, on the other hand, the Nascar comment was a Southern-by-the-grace-of-God all in fun dig at a dang yankee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I couldn't resist that because your NASCAR/fishing/basketball/turkey-hunting comment was true (for the record, I do not hunt /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Edmonton is feeling a little better this morning. A 2-1 series sure seems better than what a 3-0 would have been. It was a pretty good game. It's a good thing the Oilers won, or the referee who blew the whistle on the "goal that was no goal" would have been carried out of town /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Jussi played very well, after letting in 5 last game. Nice to see he can stand up and fill the gap.

Hopefully the Oil can win again on Monday to tie it up.

Well the Oil lost last night. It was not a good game. I don't understand how we can play so poorly on the power play. We are 1 for 25. That is horrible! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The game was close, but that doesn't really help too much. Could it all be over on Wednesday in Raleigh? Hope not!
