Oil Pressure Switch On PT422

On the Robin engine there is an oil pressure switch, but it is not connected to anything. I connected a light on the instrument panel and a Sonalert (beeping tone). This way if I drive too steep a slope or run out of oil I will know about it before the engine is totaled. The switch is located on the left side of the engine (driver perspective) just above the starter. It is hard to see the switch, but the wire hangs out and can be checked with an Ohmmeter. It is closed and connected to ground when the engine is stopped and open when the engine is running.

Good idea......may be something I will look at since I am constantly going up/down slopes.

I have not actually seen an oil pressure drop out while riding on a slope, but I do not have a lot of slopes. Still it is a good thing to monitor.

I don't know. It should not be too hard too find. It is probably just like one in a car. A cylinder about 1.5 inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter with a wire coming out of the end that is not in the engine block. I found the one on the Robin engine by reading the engine service manual that I bought from the local Robins dealer.

The Kohler has a low oil pressure shut off switch. However, I imagine that the wire is hooked up to something to kill the engine shoul low oil pressure occur.

I'm confused... why does the Robbin have a wire not hooked to anything? Is it an extra wire?

on my 425 with Robin engine, it is hooked up.

Robin makes the same engine for many different applications. Power Trac chooses not to use the oil pressure switch.

In view of your response, I investigated further. My oil switch has a wire coming out of it that appears to reattach itself to the engine block. Hard to tell, but it appears not to serve any purpose, unless the wire otherwise connects itself to the engine stop diode, and I can't see it. Afterall, it's a pretty tight to visualize completely /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I believe that one of the main purposes of low oil pressure stop is in unattended use such as a generator. Power Trac probably figures that you should check the oil prior to each use and this is enough of a check. There is a penality of low oil pressure stop - The engine will not start until oil pressure is high enough to open the switch. I think the light is a good choice for a tractor engine.
