In 1996 I purchased a Snapper Pro Hydro 52 walk behind with a 16hp Briggs Vanguard which currently has approx 520 hours on it.
For years I thought about adding an oil pressure guage but it was always a low priority.
Well 3 weeks ago I installed a 100psi gauge.
Full throttle cold it runs 70 psi and hot it runs 28 psi with Mobil1 10w30. Idle hot is 18~20 psi.
The other day I was mowing a bank like I have for years when it went over the edge and became stuck so I idled it down so I could access the situation and hopefully back it out.
As I was pondering the situation I noticed the oil pressure was zero.
I quickly shut it down and got my Ford 1720 so I could pull it out of the ditch.
Had I not installed the pressure gauge I most likely would have let it run and attempted to maneuver it out of the ditch.
The interesting thing is that it was not in a position that I would have considered extreme, but apparently it was the perfect position to move all oil away from the oil pump pickup.
That guage most likely saved me several hundred dollars.

I blew up one mower doing that.
Switch to a 2 cycle engine (a snapper) because of it.
