Oil Light

My boss owns a 1968 Ford 3000 tractor. He told me the oil was flickering on the other day. He checked the oil level and it was low. After refilling it the light is now on full time. He doesnt seem to think he has a leak. Could it just be the sensor? Are oil gauges based on volume or pressure?

Oil pressure gauges on most things are just relying on pressure and assuming good flow associated with the pressure.
The problem you describe could be a bad oil pressure sending unit or a wiring connection going to the sending unit.
You can use a pressure gauge screwed in in place of the sending unit and check for actual oil pressure, you might not have much, which is a bad thing. The oil pressure lights usually lights up at under 10lbs of oil pressure or so.
