Oil in my John Deere 455

/ Oil in my John Deere 455 #11
I just purchased a used 455 that has almost 1000 hours. Currently it uses john deere 15w-40 oil, but being that I am obsessed with synthetic oils, I want to switch it to a syn. However, I can't find anything that I know is full syn at a normal retailer that is 15w-40. But, I did find Rotella 5w-40, that had all the Deere, and Cummins, and Detroit approvals. Also, is Delvac a full synthetic oil? So, if I can't find 15w-40 would it be ok to use 5w-40 rotella, or should I just not change it and use dino, or is delvac 15w-40 a full synthetic? Any suggestions would be appriciated.

'Delvac One' is fully synthetic. I run it in all my diesels. It is one of the best but not cheap.

I used Jd oil in my old JD 455 and turned black in no time..Amsoil nope.....

Case-in-point, I do not use Jd oil anymore..

Maybe the J-D oil is cleaning better....

True but compared to Amsoil...nah..

I do not based oils on color but with my history of Amsoil diesel oils, I will take them over JD....

Not to be argumentative, but your post seemed to imply that you quit using J-D oil because it got dark quicker than Amsoil.

One reason since after 30 minutes it should not be black on a clean engine..

But it performed poorly on a blotter test

PLus it was over priced at the time..I do not have the 455 (years ago) and you cannot compare the two oils posted..

I use J-D 0-40 semi-syn in my X595, and I swear it comes out of the bottle dirty looking!! :(

By comparison, the RTS 5-40 in the 955 stays clean for hours. :)

Who knows?

I agree. The proof is pull a UOA on RTS or another..Hence I no longer use it unless it drops way in price.

I've done that on both the RTS 5-40 in the 955, and the J-D 0-40 in the X595. Doesn't seem to be much difference between them.

I actually got a pretty good deal (slightly less than $4.00/qt) on the 0-40 during the dealer's annual lube/filter sale a couple years ago. ;)

I agree. If they work well, I would do what makes you happy. For me in my BX if does not like well.

Then again, you could be pulling hairs on this topic. To add to hit, you posted on BOTIG site...I cannot stand that place.
