Oil Filters For 2815HST

Why would you guys be afraid of a wix filter for hydraulic oil? That just seems silly to me. They build a good quality, paper-element filter. It's the same dang thing as the "Mahindra" filter, just half the price.

hmmmmm as an oil nerd this is making me want to brake out my filter cutter.... I wonder if anyone would be interested in seeing cut opens of a mahindra filter and say a wix equivalent filter for comparison.

Do it! I would sure be interested. I was under the impression that there was essentially no difference.

Been there, done that. Here's some pics of the inside of the OEM/Denso oil filter for a 3215. Never seen this type of filter material before. Was like a hard brittle sponge. Denso filter1.JPGDenso filter2.JPG

interesting.. from what I have seen with toyota's that have had the denso sponge filter, it was the factory filter. buying a toyota/denso filter from the dealer resulted in a regular looking cellulose filter. A theory was that the foam filters are "break in" filters. Since the foam would most like flow oil better, but with a sacrifice to filtration efficiency.

Whoa, that's odd. Except that I would intuitively expect the opposite, Tex. A new engine has a lot of casting/machining debris left in it, and you want to capture it ASAP. I would wager that the initial filter being of a completely different type means it is actually of higher filtration capability.

Wix doesn't show a filter for the S3L3 engine in the 2815HST. I picked up a #5350 Denso ($20) from the dealer and it has the foam material like the above pictures.

Seems quality isn't the only issue. Filters have different specs for filtration, down to a certain micron. Filters have by-pass valves and some have drain back valves. I would think that if Wix specifies a particular filter for a Mahindra, they probably would do their homework and it would be proper. But a hydraulic filer with the same threads, gasket shape and size and overall size isn't necessarily correct based on just those factors. And quality can vary. If you cut apart one brand and then another, you will sometimes see a big difference in how much filter media is present. And also the thickness of the base, can, and the type and quality of the rubber seal.

I'm not saying that Mahindra filters are better than all other brands or that they aren't a little pricey, but I am saying that it isn't so simple as just matching something up that appears correct without knowing the details.

And HST tractors, if you have one, need really proper filtration and proper fluid. Don't skimp. It's not like an old gear tractor that basically needs anything slippery without big chunks.

Just my thoughts.
