I just bought a used 2005 LT1046 that has the Command 23 engine with 22 hours. My problem is the oil filter has 3 different numbers: Manual = 12-050-01-S, old filter = KH2505025, and replacement # on cowl = 12-050-08. I called tech support and the said the Manual number is correct, and they did not know where the old filter came from, even tho it was a Kohler. I got a STP equiv, STP3512, but it is an inch shorter then the one I took off. Should I be concerned?

James, these engines use an oil filter with 3/4-16 threads and 2.734" gasket dia. Since I have tons of room under the hood with the Kohler Command 20hp on my 2544, I run a Carquest/Napa eqiv of a Motorcraft FL400A / Fram PH3600. Your STP (Champion Labs) filter may have the new "E-Core" design with a plastic cage for the core as opposed to a metal perforated tube. Look down the threaded hole to verify. E-Cores tend to be shorter due to this. They are still a good filter. Lots of users have reported great results. I cut an STP E-core apart that was in use for 5Kmi with 5w-30 on a 2003 GM 3.4L V6. The filter held up well and was well constructed. You'll get lots of views on this, but I like to run the largest filter I can fit on OPE. It allows the engine to hold a larger volume of oil.
