oil filter brands

Kubota l4300 tractor-Baldwin oil filter B7240. Looks like a regular auto oil filter, is there a cross referance from Baldwin to an auto filter or is that an issue. Auto filter would be cheaper and easier to get but not sure if tractor vs auto filters are built different? Also the hydraulic filter is Baldwin BT 8488 and if that can be cross referance. Thanks

A man would like to believe that the branded filters at dealers are tougher, better, more quality than others, but how do you know? Fleetguard is owned by Cummins I believe, so you assume they have good filters for a Cummins. But does Wix or Purolater build junk? If you have a truck dealer nearby, you might check to see if anyone carries Donaldson filters. I like them, but you never know, they may be junk too. My Ford F-350 diesel went 250K with no engine problems using Donaldsons.

Hastings is Baldwin. Same company.
NAPA is usually just Wix.

As for quality, who knows. There is simply too little empirical comparative data. One thing is for sure. A top grade filter is a desirable item.

What does anyone really know of the "oem" filters branded and sold at tractor dealerships? Not very much. I know, everyone says they must be good because they have the dealerships Kubota, Massey, Kioti, Mahindra, etc brand, right?

Not sure. Made in India. Made in Indonesia. Made in China. To the OEM's specs? Pretty sure. All these sales pale when compared to the number of sales for big trucks running millions a miles a day. Most will have Baldwin/Hastings, FleetGuard, Purolator, etc.

You cannot do much better than a Hastings/Baldwin filter. Take care not to cross reference your way into a much poorer quality filter, you can do it, but I am not sure why you would.

Thanks guys, just wanting to see if I had to use a certain brand vs another brand than the local auto/tractor store here. From what I found was that a Wix filter can be used.

all good info here. Most filters are good, it depends on what you want. Eff or Cap.

I use purolator on my BX since WIX is more money.

I'd be surprised if you could not cross them.. especially a baldwin #

In most cases I like to run oem filters.. at least for me.. they aren't much more $ than crosses.. plus keeps the dealer in business .. or helps anyway..

I agree with keeping a dealer in biz, but in my case a Kubota BX oil filter is nothing short of a supertech at 3X the price.

you do what you have to.. all of us do..

I run 'whatever' on most of my antique work tractors.. IE.. supertech oil and filters.

they just keep running.. so i doubt it's hurting them any..
