The engine should hold a little over 5 quarts.

Check your dip stick and then measure how much you drain out. Add as necessary to bring it up to the full mark. My three cylinder engine holds in the vicinity of five quarts including filter.

For the YM2000, there is English-language documentation: the manual for its US twin, YM240. That says a fill takes 5 quarts.

However my YM240 is semi-retired to 99% backhoe use where it idles along at 1300 rpm turning the hydraulic pump and seldom is loaded enough to make any smoke. I run with 4 quarts which puts the oil level at the mid point on the dipstick between full/add. It never uses any oil so it remains at that level until the next change.

I used to run 5 quarts when it was used for mowing, rototilling etc running hard at full output.

Here's a photo I posted when someone asked about their missing original dipstick. I put the wire to point out a very small dimple I made in the dipstick to show where 4 quarts fills it to. 5 quarts fills it to the upper line after the new filter has filled up.

Yup buy 6 qts. and fill to the full mark. Are you aware that the oil is checked with the dipstick just sitting on the threads, not screwed in?

I have always don't this and read that's the way to do it but over on a lawn mower landscape guy forum they were talking about checking oil is suppose to be done threading it in. There talking kholer or kawasaki though and maybe those are different that we check all other things?

I have read on small engine forums that it's a Japanese thing, (Kawasaki, but not Kholer), assumimg they screw in.

Has anyone found Yanmar's advice on screw in to check level?

I push in dipsticks that have a rubber slide-in fitting, (on the YM186D) but for a threaded dipstick I just rest it on the opening. Dunno if that's what Yanmar intended.
