My Deere LA 115 has begun mis-firing when it warms up. Manipulating the choke doesn't make any difference. The troubleshooting section of the manual says I should try changing the oil. The engine has 13 hours on it.

My question is this...why does oil have anything to do with a mis-fiiring engine? It behaves like the carb setting is too lean. I have changed the fuel filter and the air filter. I have also drained out old gas and put in new gas. No difference. SO before I go to the trouble of changing the oil, can someone shed some light on my question about the oil change?

welcome to the forum. I noticed that your name is the same as mine. Where do you hail from.

I had trouble with my classic mustang misfiring when warmed up. ended up being fixed with a capaciter in the distributor that was bad. I think it cost 2 dollars. engine would idle fine but upon giving it any gas it would miss. I cannot think of any reason the oil change would be a factor unless it had a type of low oil switch that was getting clogged.
probably not one of those on your tractor. I would look at coil also. Feel it and see if it is real hot to the touch.

Their advice is wrong.

I'd try some Seafoam in the tank. It cleared up misfiring problems on my Gravely and both my 2 walk behind lawnmowers. Seems to work well on carburetored engines.

Just another aside: I think that the 10% Ethanol Gas that they are forcing us to buy, is giving us a lot of this grief............(rant over) ................Scotty

PS, I've been trying to treat all my fuel. with "Stabil", year round, but I will say, I've missed a few batches.........

Rick- After a re-read...........Was this a 'new' purchase? 13 Hours? I'd be taking it back, and making them fix/or replace it!

I use Seafoam in every gas or gas/oil powered engine. Has made a HUGE difference in performance. Carbs stay cleaner and any water absorbed by the ethanol is taken care of by Seafoam. Amazing stuff. I'll never look back!

The reasoning behind the oil change is this: Engines run at less than WOT or with poor quality fuel will tend to allow raw fuel to wash past the rings. This both thins the oil and overfills the sump. If your oil level is normal, you can probably skip the oil change.

13 hours? It's a warranty issue. I'd take it to the dealership and tell them to fix it.

13 hours? It's a warranty issue.

That's a common misconception. Not talking about this particular situation, just in general.

If you use and maintain a product in a manner that is consistent with what the manufacturer recommends and requires and your equipment has an issue with materials and/or workmanship during its warranty period, then it's a warranty issue.

Problems that happen to occur within the warranty period are not automatically warranty issues.

If that seems confusing, watch this video and listen carefully to what this owner did, and now wants coverage for. Pay particular attention to what his wife, (the camera operator), says. She's also under the impression that anything that occurs within the warranty period is a get-out-of-jail-free-card. While the video may seem credible to some folks, if you really listen to what they're saying, they really shot themselves in the foot when they decided to break out their camera and shoot this attempted expose' in the first place.

YouTube - Problems with Deutz Engine's (part 1)

Read the comments posted by viewers. I have several in there because during his "video testimony" he actually admitted that after his engine failed, he went back and read his manual cover to cover. He then said the recommended angle spec and warnings of engine damage were "buried" in the manual, which I thought was funny because anyone can download and look at his product manual online and see how "un-buried" the specs and recommendations actually are. (And not only is there warning text in the manual, but there's also a page with pictures of the machine's warning decals in case some become illegible and you want to order replacements.) If he had read and followed what the manufacturer said, he wouldn't be out an expensive engine.

It's not that I don't feel sorry that he's out an engine, I just think that he's totally downplaying his role in its demise, and that even though he knowingly did so.....he still wants warranty consideration. The video is nothing more than an attempt by the owner to coerce the dealer and/or manufacturer into paying the $$ by applying the old "squeaky wheel gets the grease" theory.

Once again, not saying anything like this is what's going on with the machinery in this thread, just posting for warranty misconception consideration.

I wonder if the genius in the video knows that there are machines that are designed for side hill applications.;)
