does anyone use one? comments? I managed to round off the flats on the drain plug on JD870, tried vise grips but no luck. An oil change pump seems a simple alternative, also good, in theory, for the lawnmower, generator, edger, etc.

I opine theyre an alternative ONLY when you cant get to the plug like some inboard/outboard boats etc. You cant get it all in likelyhood with a pump---but I suppose better than nothing.
Maybe work a little harder with the vice grips or hit the edge of the rounded plug in the loosening direction with an air chissel.

If you don't have an air chisel, a regular cold chisel and hammer will do the trick alot of times.

I use a Pela Oil Extractor (manual vacuum pump) with a 6L (6.34 qt.) capacity. In use the past 4 years... sometimes easier to just pull a drain-plug, sometimes easier to use the oil extractor. On my diesel Dodge (Cummins) and tractor, it's easier to just drain the oil.

Originally purchased the Pela for my VW TDI... easiest oil change by far using the extractor.

Many small engines I maintain don't have drain-plugs, (even if they did) and the oil extractor is the only answer. Some engines (my generator) with easily accessible drain-plugs still get the vacuum treatment.

I also use the vacuum pump to change auto-transmission fluid... If I lost/damaged my oil extractor, I'd definitely replace with another

Where did you buy it and what did it cost if I may ask?

I've a Brookstone suction pump. It's kinda slow. Think they offer a container linked to a vacuum pump that would be much faster. Think it's about $40. You could probably make one yourself using one of those hand vacuum pumps like I use to suck brake fluid out of the master cylinders for changing once/year. Just run it through a tank between your engine sump and suction pump. It'll take a few pumps to get the vacuum drawn, but it'll then suck pretty good with a stiff line into the sump under oil.

You could probably use one of those pumps that you put on your electric drill. You just need a stiff, skinny suction line to go down the dipstick hole. Actually, for your tractor, it won't need to be too skinny, just stiff so it doesn't curl at the bottom of the sump.

The Mercedes mechanics at the local dealership said this is how they change the oil in their clients' cars now, by suction pump. It's a lot easier on cars nowadays that have enclosures underneath the engine compartment, like all Benzes, Buicks, etc. have.

I have an idea.

I saw a socket ('Gator?) that consisted of pins instead of a cast-in hex normally found in the socket. If the corners are rounded, the pins will fit around them and be flush with the flats of the hex.

I would bet that socket with a impact handle (the type you hit with a hammer, not an air wrench) would remove the plug.

I have one of these and I really like it. It is simple and it works.

Topsider

I had one of the cheapy drill pumps and it quit on me.

No pumping 50-60 times either. 5 or 10 and away you go.

Purchased from West Marine... don't remember the exact price, $50.00 range. (it was on sale)

West Marine doesn't list Pela at this time, but their Oil Boy Fluid Extractor Kit looks like my Pela. Only difference is the Oil Boy is 5L capacity, (Pela is 6L) and a bit shorter. (1L shorter ;-)

Thanks to all for their comments. I'm no mechanic and I am a klutz, so the air chisel and cold chisel options make me nervous. Will try the Gator, sounds like it may work and seems safe even in my hands.

Will also get the Pela, Cabela's carries it for $40. Checked West Marine for the Topsider, customer reviews had about half loving it, half hating it.

Will post comments on the Gator and the Pela after I've used them.
